Yes, seeing the Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) is why people come; but the views of the city from up here are beautiful. Just be flexible with your schedule if you come outside of summer; impending rain and thick fog will obscure your view of anything -- even the famous statue. Oh, and not to frighten you, but if your train up gets stuck on the tracks, rest assured you'll be rescued in no time. Or you could just scale the mountain...yup, people actually mountain climb up here.

Corcovado is a mountain that contains the famous Christ the Redeemer statute. Corcovado is 710 meters tall (2,239 feet) and is accessible by car and tram. I recommend taking the tram so you can go through the steep incline through Tijuca Forest.

Visit Corcovado and Cristo - a MUST for every visitor to Rio. Make sure to bring a sweater or windbreaker - it's cold up there!

Loved it, however we went on a cloudy day...so needless to say we didn't get the spectacular view. On the way up we got stopped for some nice shots. the statue was amazing to see even in the fog....it had an eerie appearance, which made it interesting. I recommend this going here, however skip the expensive tour buses and just take a taxi there and go up yourself!!!

It is one of those things in life you have to do. If you time it wrong and the clouds come in though you may has well have just purchased a postcard. We had a mixed day but when it was clear it was superb.
On a clear day you get a real sense of the Rio landscape and how the different parts of the city are arranged. If you are in Rio is it a must but get there early as queues can be huge.

Make sure you go on a clear day to enjoy the best views of Rio. It gets super crowded so go on a weekday if possible and go early in the day to avoid the long lines for the train. Reserve at least a few hours and bring snacks (or buy them there) and water. It's a must see but it's super touristy so be patient with all the people!!

Photo taken at Estrada do Corcovado on my way up to Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor). A mix of cosmopolitan city, nature and beaches results in a wonderful city as Rio de Janeiro. Called in Brazil "cidade maravilhosa" . Corcovado is a must-see sight.

The Christo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) was started in 1926 and finished by 1931. It's truly one of the great wonders of the world. I look forward to standing before the Cristo Redentor on my next trip to Rio, which I hope is real soon.

Gorgeous mountain, with great views. Of course, the main reason to come up here is to see the Cristo statue.

Best to go around mid-afternoon, the view from the top is the most spectacular, looking one side at the Botafaogo and Sugarloaf and other side to the lake and the beaches. Amaing 360 degree view!

The hike up Corcovado from Jardin Botanico is a bit steep, but nicely wooded for an urban area. There are signs to beware of thieves, so I packed a fake-wallet to give up in case we were mugged. Even park attendants warned of hiking up there, but just be aware of your surroundings and you'll likely be fine. It's cool to approach the giant Christ the Redeemer statue from the woods...when we got there lightning struck its base!! Don't wear metal hats.

This is the top place in Rio with 360 degree view from the top with awesome view. This is the most famous place in Rio where the gorgeous statue of Chris watching the city. Recommend to go up in a good weather without rain or fog, otherwise you will miss the view. Take organized tour from your hotel which stops in 5 places in the city.
