Commissioned in the 16th century and named for the future Pope Paul III, this impressive palazzo sits in Rome after 500 years. Famed artist Michelangelo is just one of the many artists and architects ... Read more
to lend ideas to the layout of this building. Many rooms have beautiful frescos that adorn the walls, so walking through the rooms is like walking through both an art gallery and a historical museum. This palace is now home to the French embassy in Rome. As of 2012, the palace now offers tours in English.

While I've never been inside, it's a nice place for photos. The exterior is quite lovely.

If you love architecture and Renaissance Italy you'll love touring this important Palace. Except for the tour, it is closed to the public as it currently houses the French Embassy. But if you sign up online in advance (the English tour is only Wednesdays at 5pm) and are prepared for about 15 minutes of your hour being taken getting through the security, the tour is very historical and definitely worth it. This palace, first floor designed by Sangallo for a Cardinal celebrating all things Roman, the second and third floors designed by Michaelangelo when the Cardinal became Pope John III has a fun history of conflict between these two architects that makes the tour fun. Loved the staircases and terra cotta floors. Most of the art work has been raided or transferred to Naples but the frescos and wood carved ceiling that remain are eye catching. The front (public facing persona) is somber and calm, but the courtyard, and especially the private garden area are much more elaborate. No photos were allowed on the tour unfortunately.

This imposing High Renaissance palace is currently the French embassy in Italy. Dates from the early 16th century when the Farnese family commissioned it, but it was enlarged considerably when Paul III became pope. We had a private tour, which I gather are hard to come by, and it was well worth it. Alternatively, if you have business in the French School in Rome (on the upper floors), you might get access that way.
