Russia Vacations

Few nations in the world have garnered as many preconceived notions as has Russia. Before the 1990's, Russia was just a concept to most Westerners. Over the past two decades, Russia has opened its borders and millions of travelers now flock to visit the cultural heritage and natural beauty of Russia. The vastness of this country alone (Asian Russia ... Read more
is twice the size of Europe) is almost inconceivable, and the scale means there are no less than 23 UNESCO World Heritage sites. Moscow’s Kremlin is an architectural marvel while St. Petersburg's Hermitage Museum -- with its imposing façade and thousands of Russian art and artifacts -- is the largest museum collection in the world. Want to get a little more adventurous? Consider a nation-spanning sightseeing adventure on the Trans-Siberian Railway, or head to the crystal-clear waters and beaches of 'the pearl of Siberia,' Lake Baikal. Russian dishes like borscht (beet soup) and pelmini (meat-filled dumplings) are everywhere, but in many Russian cities, you can find unique cuisines like Georgian or Uzbek.

as -85 (-65). The European side seems balmy in comparison, rarely falling below -4 (-20). But traveling to Mother Russia in the winter can be a mixed blessing: though you’ll endure the snow and cold, you’ll also get to ride in a troika (a horse-drawn sledge), and score more off-season bargains. Summers are much more temperate and even hot in July and August. If you can swing it, head to St. Petersburg in the early part of July during the city’s “White Nights”, when the sun doesn’t fully set.

LGBTQ Tips

Use caution when traveling in Russia: 'do not display your sexual orientation openly' and 'be ultra-polite and respectful of the Russian culture.' Pride was banned in Moscow in 2012 and LGBTQ activism is illegal as of 2017.

I've only been to the European portion of Russia, which covers 25 percent of the country even though it has 75 percent of the population. Still having seen a mix of Russia ranging from big cities to small villages and vast countrysides I can say I'm very impressed with this country. It has the most ornate, beautiful architecture I've ever seen, a fascinating history, and still feels closed off enough from the rest of the world to get the sense that you're always discovering something new.

I have only been to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Uglich, Kostroma, Sergiev Posad, Kizhi Island and a few other Russian cities, so it's difficult to make a judgement about all of Russia, but I will say from the few places that I have been in Russia, I am highly impressed with the Russian people. And what a beautiful country, rich in history, architecture, literature, and the women are extremely feminine, and many of them are quite beautiful.
