century and continued for almost 500 years. Three times a day, visitors hear the chimes of the castle's spectacular 16th century organ, nicknamed the "Salzburg Bull", which blares its music from 200 brass pipes. Festung Hohensalzburg also houses some of the most lavish living quarters of any fortress in Austria. Known as the Golden Hall and the Golden Chamber, this array of apartments served as the home for the Prince Archbishop of Salzburg and his family.

Amazing historic fortress with beautiful sights to the whole city and the mountains.

Took the train to the top. There is an audio guide for the museum. Definitely worth a visit of you are in town.

Best view of the city. Enjoyed walking around the castle and viewing the medieval displays. I chose to hike up to the fortress, rather than take the funicular. Fair warning, it's a climb!

I went there a lot of times, but I really liked it everytime. It's something that's also good for kids and you can see a lot there.

You have to go to the top, you must. The ride up is enjoyable. The museum is interesting but I primarily enjoy the view.

This is one of the must sees in salzburg. It's a fun ride up the funicular to get here especially with kids - get the seats at the bottom of the car. Inside there is a cool museum where you can see old swords, canons and armor, furniture and plates etc from the period. I didn't feel like the signs alone helped me understand the full history. If you have the time, I would recommend the audio tour...

I really recommend to take the Festungsbahn (funicular railway) up to the Hohensalzburger Fortress because of the amazing views of the city, specially the historic centre and the river Salzach. It also includes a Marionette museum.

This is the largest, fully-preserved fortress in central Europe. You ned to take a funicular to reach the top and get a good view of the city.

a nice castle both from the outside or the inside. you can either walk up or take a ride up but will strongly advice elder/people with leg/knee problems to take a ride up as the walk consist of alot of VERY STEEP slopes which is very bad for the knees.

Hohensalzburg Fortress is the fortress overlooking the town of Salzburg. You can access the fortress by hike or by the funicular. Inside, you'll get a tour of the fortress but the main attraction is the view you get of the city.

Have to take the funicular up to the Hohensalzburg Fortress (Festung Hohensalzburg). You can see the Salzburg city view with Salzach River, two towns along the coast. The left is old town and the right is a new town. It's beautiful town.

A person can almost get lost in this place! Really interesting piece of history; easy on the eyes. Great vantage point over the city. Try to visit this one on a clear day.

Hohensalzburg is a huge castle, that's built on the highest point of the city. There regular guided tours through the fortress, but you can also walk the castle by yourself. If you want to visit, try to go their by foot, as the view over Salzburg is pretty nice from the path.

Amazing views from the top! I had read poor reviews before and was hesitant to pay 10 euros for the tour and funicular. It was completely worth it! The fortress is really fascinating and you could easily spend several hours wandering around the grounds. There are three museums of varying quality as well as places to eat.

12th century fortress overlooking the city. Impressive, imposing, and if you go to the top? Great photo ops with the city in the background.

I really liked the audio tour! It takes you all around the castle. The tour was recommended for my student group of 50. I had organized the trip. I don't know if I'd recommend this tour for younger children, but it was very interesting to me!
