A beautiful cave that conceals a lake and that has an opening above, letting the sun shine in. It is just outside of Sami and very easy to find. While I found it the cave itself very pretty, it was a little too touristy for my liking. A 10 minute ride in a row boat is 7 euros and the guys rowing the boats keep asking for tips! Still worth a quick visit though to see this unique cave.

located ~17 km from the villas. It is a lacustrine cave of unique beauty and fully developed cave, which is 3.5 km long, 40m wide and 36m high. Melissani cave constitutes a unique geological phenomenon. It was created by a mechanical and chemical process called karstikopoiisi (dissolution of rocks) during which water enters the calcareous rocks, erodes them and creates hollows.
A big part of its roof has fallen down revealing an amazing sight. During antiquity the lake was a place of worship dedicated to Pan and Nymph Melissani. Myths mention that Melissani committed suicide and fell in the lake because Pan was not responding to her love for him.

Lake Melissani has an absolute invisible specialty, which sounds pretty strange. The lake water is brackish, a mixture of sea water and sweet water.
Today the lake has two big water filled halls and an island in the middle. The first hall has a big oval opening to the surface, where the sunlight shines in. When the sun is directly overhead, its rays strike the ultramarine water, lighting the cave with blue light. So the best time to visit the cave is on a sunny day at the middle of the day. Nevertheless, a visit at the morning or in the evening has its own atmosphere. The boats seem to hover on a lake of blue light.

For most of our guests, Melissani Cave Lake is the favourite 'must see' place. If you visit at noon (or an hour or two either side is OK), the waters of the lake have a colour spectrum quite unimaginable if not seen - from the deepest darkest sea green/blue to a sparkling turquoise. Magical!
