The rooms were small but the staff was accommodating and upgraded us since we were Inner Circle members. Definitely join the Kimpton Karma club to get comp wifi. Also, don't know if it's still available, but they had an option of completing a short survey to get $10 credit to raid the snack bar.

If you travel a lot and like the boutique hotel feel, kimpton is definitely a great option. As an inner circle member, you get to tell them upon booking what three items you want them to place in your room upon arrivals-a 'wish list.' I always put Ben & Jerry's and they always bring be a pint ! However, do note that if you're going the loyal route with a kimpton, the rooms are small in many hotels and some do not have a pool like your standard Hiltons or Fairmonts.

The hotel Palomar makes a strong impression, with a sleek, modern design that invokes sophistication without having to resort to chandeliers and antique furniture. Its design is stark and ultra modern, and this works very well most of the time. However, when it doesn't, form becomes a very real impediment to function -- such as the bank-vault styled front door, which, from the street, doesn't even seem to open.

Upgrading, even one tier, in the rooms certainly seems worthwhile. The room was huge, with separate sitting areas, and a bathroom that included a legendary deep-basin-style soaking tub. The massive floor to ceiling windows flooded the room with bright, cheery light, and offered an amazing view of downtown and the bay.

Finally, if being amongst the bustle of the Gaslamp is a draw, the hotel could not be better positioned. Countless top-notch eateries, bars, and other types of entertainment are available just outside the front door.

I really like the Kimpton line of hotels -- they're not super expensive (they have a range of prices, depending on location of the hotel of course) and they're all pretty nice. Sign up for Kimpton InTouch (rewards program); they send you 20% off for any booking on a hotel during your birthday month! That's what I did for this trip with my mom and brother. My mom isn't used to staying in mid-level hotels, so it was nice for me to be able to treat them.

The hotel is located in the middle of Downtown SD; my only complaint is the valet parking at the hotel, grrrr...It's located in a great spot with lots of options for family-friendly restaurants as well as options to go out with friends/colleagues. If you walk about 5 blocks down 5th, you'll hit the Gaslamp District, full of bars, restaurants, and clubs.

I booked a Deluxe room, which had 2 full beds. The room was nice and spacious with dark wood floors and high ceilings. There's a small TV, plush sofa seat, wardrobe, mini fridge, and desk. The bathroom is modern as well with a sand/stone colored shower and sink. The shower doesn't have a door; it's designed so that you don't splash beyond the opening. The shower is a rain shower, cool!

They have their own restaurant and bar, SaltBox. The bar has an entrance from the street level on the outside of the building; the restaurant is upstairs (Mezzanine level from inside the hotel). When I checked in, they gave me a couple vouchers for a drink (up to $13) at SaltBox, how awesome!

The room was very narrow and had an odd layout. The decor was very cool, but it wasn't functional, especially the bathroom. The glass sliding door left a 2 inch gap on either side of the door so you could see the person inside using the bathroom. The staff was also very snooty and not at all helpful.
