Beautiful old hotel in the heart of the gaslamp district. Love the little courtyard in the center, a great place for a small wedding. There is also a horse in the lobby! He is historical, you have to read the story posted on him :)

The Horton Grand School is old school in service, decor, and ambience. It's a charming hotel located in the heart of San Diego.

Prime location for this lovely historical hotel. Great bar with grand piano playing most of the time. Has a haunted history which is showcased right near the lobby. Very cool spot!

Not only is this hotel right in the middle of all the fun in the Gaslamp, they've also got a great open courtyard covered by trees and gas fireplaces in every room. Very romantic.

An amazingly beautiful hotel with a rich history. It is right in the Gaslamp quarter and has been since the late 1800's. Some even say it haunted! There are tours onsite because it's a historical monument. The Palace bar and hotel and phenomenal, such classy decor! They have valet service and sometimes have a piano player in the romantic bar downstairs.

Downtown San Diego, despite the city's reputation for being laid-back and "chill" (we all say "awesome" and "sweet, dude"), can be a bit intense with all the one-way streets, hordes of pedestrians, and heavy traffic. So when I arrived at the Horton Grand after circling for ten minutes trying to find parking and not run anybody over, I was rather frazzled. And yet when I stepped into the lobby, my nerves were set instantly back at ease. The sun streamed through the glass-paned ceiling, sending beams that dazzled on what looked like an old Victorian parlor: complete with clawed-foot furniture, large baskets full of colorful flowers, and an old grandfather clock. The manager smiled warmly at me from the desk, welcomed me to his historic pride and joy, and showed me the equally as enchanting room. A four poster bed, gas fireplace, and gorgeous mahogany armoire waited for me, while a tiny bathroom managed to delight me with the old-fashioned toilet pull chain. Excitedly, I meandered through the rest of the hotel to explore, and found another parlor complete with antique armchairs, a delicately curved stairwell, water paintings, and an old handcrafted papier-mache horse (appropriately named Sunshine). The courtyard outside was a charming place to read a book, amidst the tinkle of the water fountain and the twinkle of the string lights overhead. And if total nostalgia isn't your thing, this whimsical and elegant retreat to the 1880s manages to inject some modern-day amenities: enjoy free Wifi, in-room coffee makers, and large flatscreen televisions in the Grand rooms.

While downtown San Diego beyond the Gaslamp can be a little sketchy at times, this hotel has quite a bit of charm thrown in to counteract the smog and just about heinous parking situation. The front door itself was lovely with ornate calligraphy, and I was very surprised to walk into such a quaint foyer. I loved the historical photos and antique items strewn about the several rooms of the lobby, and was glad to hear that the vintage ambiance of the hotel doesn’t follow through to its technology- free WiFi! The details of my room were what really made it stand out from most hotels- the rich rood armoire, the fireplace, and even the vintage toilet tank with a pull flush. The room wasn’t particularly large, and the bedding could have been a little plusher, but I can overlook a thing or two for such a relaxing and cozy hotel close to the heart of downtown. I'll just be sure to take public transportation next time.

There are countless reasons why this hotel is the absolute definition of charming. The vintage furniture decorating the brightly lit lobby makes guests feel as if they have stepped back in time. The front desk receptionist, Ken, made me want to stick around for hours and chat over a cup of tea. I instantly felt comfortable and peaceful, and Ken kept the ambiance of the hotel light and airy. The room I was showed to followed the theme of the hotel by offering a big vintage bed frame paired with a wonderful chest of drawers. My favorite part of the room was the gas burning fireplace! Ken assured me that there have never been any fire accidents despite each room having a fireplace! There is a glorious balcony patio shaded from the San Diego heat by an awning of leaves and vines. Beware though, this hotel is said to be haunted! No ghost could defer me from staying here.

An old-fashioned oasis in busy downtown San Diego, the Horton has elegant ambiance but doesn't miss out on modern conveniences, and some would say essentials, like free Wifi.
