Traditional Moroccan offerings, including small plates & hearty stews, in a chic, exotic setting.

Moroccan food is not something you can easily find in San Diego. Kous Kous is my go to place for great food and a exotic atmosphere. The food is outstanding and the decor just adds to the feelin of visiting Morocco. The best dishes are the Tagine meats they are so tender they melt off the bone and in your mouth. My favorite is the Chicken Tagine Braised in garlic, ginger and saffron sauce, with olives, and preserved lemon served with saffron rice or cous cous. Be sure and have the cous cous. If you are in a large group they do have Moroccan Feast tailor to every taste and give you a sample of just about everything on the menu. Take a trip to Morocco you will not be disappointed.

For those of you who have never tried anything as exotic as Morrocan, do not be afraid. Kous Kous, located in Hillcrest, is the absolute ideal spot to spoil your tastebuds. Our bUZZ Night had two gals that eat only what they know, but both experimented this night. I think what helped was the environment we were in. Driving by you would never expect something to be so dynamic inside this place. If you are looking for a romantic spot to take someone, this is the place. Even a business associate would appreciate the fact that you knew of such a unique and lovely hole in the wall. The group of us dined at a couch and chair surrounding a lower table. It was different….good different. We liked that.

Happy hour lasted until 6pm and we took advantage of that by ordering a few tapas dishes for 50% off. (A gal ordered just a glass of wine and one tapas and walked out only spending $9.50! She was thrilled!) I started off with the Zaalook, which is roasted eggplant flavored with cumin, olive oil and lemon preserves served with pita bread. That is me experimenting and I was so glad I did. Of course this dish was passed around and it was a huge hit with EVERYONE! The Zaalook was server recommended.

I shared the Beef Tangine, which is braised with “Ras’l hanout”, carrots, green peas, olives and lemon preserves. If you like stew, this is the dish for you and it’s more flavorful! We were both full of one Tapas and one main dish. I definitely recommend ordering a few items and sharing them. Trying new foods is an adventure and that’s what life is. Don’t miss out on traveling to Morocco right here in our hometown.

What an amazing great find! This place is a true gem. Dined here on the Christmas night and they offered their regular menu with none of the silly overpriced pre fixe menu nonsense.

Love the food. Love every single items I have ordered.

Vegetarian Small Plates Full Sampler (4/5 Stars) - Vegetarian or not, all the dips were excellent. The pita bread was great.
B'stila roll (5/5 Stars) - Phylo was paper thin and very crispy. The roll was overloaded with fillings. An absolutely amazing dish!
Merguez (5/5 Stars) - Very tender and flavorful lamb sausage. A must try for lamb lovers.
Lamb Briouates M'Diourates (3.5/5 Stars) - A little coarse compare to the B'stila roll but the lamb filling was delicious despite being a bit gamey.
Beef Bochette (4/5 Stars) - I wish there were more. That's all.
Lamb Shank Tagine (5/5 Stars) - Very tender lamb shank with a sinfully rich but non overwhelming sauce. Love the texture and the taste. One of the better lamb shank dish I have had.

Dinner is tapas style. All dishes are meant to be shared. The dining room is very comfortable and a bit unconventional. Imagine sitting on a sofa while munching on the delicious pita bread and slowly devouring some lamb sausages. The decor is full of character. Both tasteful and fun.

Save room for some mint tea after dinner. Your meal won't be complete without some.

Good food, and lots of it. Dishes were on the pricier side, in my opinion. Still, a good place to get together with friends for good food and great conversation. Could also be a potential date spot.

Kous Kous is a GREAT ethnic restaurant tucked away in the heart of Hillcrest. The moment you step foot in this restaurant, the romantic and mystical ambiance transports you to Morocco. The food is exceptional! Incredible, bold flavors that will leave you in a state of bliss. Sample some Moroccan tapas while sipping cinnamon spiced Sangria or, if your ravenous, indulge in a 5 or 7 course Moroccan family-style feast for only $20-30 per person. What a deal! Kous Kous has great happy hour specials as well.
