Expect a long line on weekends and in the summer. This place is especially busy during happy hours. Crowded for a reason, this casual sushi dive is efficient through practise, and well-priced for the quality of the fish. Adventurous souls as well as the "ick! Raw fish!" crowd and everyone in between will find something to please. Sushi rolls and sake bombs are the most popular.

Best budget sushi place in San Diego! Just like its sister restaurant in Hillcrest!

San Diego's mini sushi chain - there's three in all - is a great place to stop for the budget minded and hungry. They are known for their inventive rolls, bento boxes and drink specials.

They are not a ultra high grade traditionalist type of place - so do not expect that. But they do prepare really tasty food, some of it quite unique and different, like the fusion tacos, on a budget that a college student could afford.

They are popular, and there can be lines - especially during the traditional meal hours. All three restaurants are of the same quality, so just pick the closest one (downtown, get your parking validated at Horton Plaza for free). Check their website for the monthly specials, but there is always something crazy like $4 craft drafts and $6.99 bentos.

The sushi here is definitely not authentic, but if you're a poor college student in San Diego area seeking cheap Japanese inspired food then you may dig the monthly specials. I went recently and was able to get 4 different types of rolls (pre-selected) for about $10. It's nothing gourmet, but it'll fill you up!

I used to go here a lot when I worked in downtown. They have a separate line for togo but sometimes their sushi I cold depending on what you order. Dining there is better but the wait can be really long.

I feel like this Sushi Deli is better than the one located near Convoy. Parking here is a bit easier since you can park in the parking structure and get validation.

Like the one on Convoy, prepare to wait-- it gets pretty crowded. I feel that the service here is slightly better than the other one. Price-wise, it is pretty much the same. You get decent sushi on a budget, but it's not necessarily the best sushi I've had.

Do give it a shot if you ever want some sushi and don't want to spend too much.

I've eaten at budget friendly sushi joints before, but this by far takes the cake. A wait is always expected with this location since it's next to Horton Plaza. I had plenty of time to stare at the menu. With so many NOM-worthy choices, I had to do double, even triple takes at it because of the insanely good prices on their rolls. My dinner consisted of the Deluxe combo featuring the Keith Special, Katie, Ninja and Ensenada rolls. I also had a Dynamite Special roll in addition to that. It was a freakin' plethora of sushi. So much that I hit food baby status half way into eating. I was more than happy to take the leftovers back to the hotel with me. If I'm ever back here, I'll be sure have their Crazy special (Large Sapporo with small unfiltered sake BKA Crazy Milk) again along with my rolls. Argh, I'm beginning to salivate just thinking about it. Beyond impressed with SD2. Be back soon, hopefully!

It has been a long time since I've been here... I moved to LA and once I got to go back to SD... sushi Deli time! Good stuff.

Just as I remembered... Long ass line, busy and crowded... But the food was still good.

Rules for eating at Sushi Deli:

1. Arrive EARLY. There will be a line for the open at 5:30pm. So get there at 5 or before and wait. It's worth the wait.

2. If you want parking, park in Horton Plaza (free for two hours with validation - there is a validation machine in HP).

3. Order all that you want first because it gets sooo busy that it will take awhile for the next set of food.

Wrote our names down - make sure your entire party is there or else they won't seat you and they added "won't seat more than 10 people at a table" but I had 6 total anyways haha but just wanted to let you know.

location:
Next to Horton Plaza. Shopping! Park at Horton for free 2 hour parking (validate at machines).

Ambiance
Casual crowd. This is not a high end Japanese place. This is a laid back but busy japaneseplace because the rolls are not super pricey... Like RA down the street.

food
Good. I like how SD2 caters to non-raw fish eating people with rolls that do not contain raw fish. Good. We had two people in our group who do not eat raw fish, so it worked out and plus they got a meat meal.

Good rolls:
Navavana roll
Satsuki
Sunrise

It's still good after three years of being away from SD.

Sushi Deli 2 is AWESOME! It's some of the most tasty and affordable sushi I've stumbled upon in San Diego so far. This place is always packed, which is a testament to just how awesome this deli and it's sushi is. Unless you get there early, expect to wait a good 30-45 minutes outside the establishment before getting a table. But it's well worth the wait. Sushi Deli has an extensive and creative menu that can be overwhelming to any sushi lover. Fortunately, the price is right making it easy to give into your temptations and order multiple rolls to share with the group or indulge in yourself. Their more "fancy" rolls, which you would pay $15-20 for at other restaurants, all cost under $10 and are Mmm-mmm good! I recommend getting a baked roll: they come out warm and gooey thanks to the spicy mayo smothered on top. This sushi literally will melt in your mouth!

One of the most inexpensive and tasty sushi places in San Diego. This place is always packed every day of the week because of its close proximity to Horton Plaza and reputation for delivering budget friendly and decent quality rolls--most rolls cost between $5-$7. Combos include a lot of food and cost around $9 to $10 each. If raw fish does not appeal to you, a variety of noodles, tempura, and teriyaki items can also be had with your choice of chicken, beef, or seafood/shrimp.

Sushi elitists beware: it's more about quantity here then quality. The rolls are a little heavy on the rice and other filler and I'm quite certain they don't fly their fish in fresh from Japan. But as a starving and broke college student, I always came away from here feeling satiated and still able to pay my rent.
