Why wouldn't you go up. Maybe it means more to the locals because it has been closed since the 30s. Now they take 14 up at a time to the tower to over look Balboa. The views are to the ocean and the park. Easy steps up.

Learning the history of Balboa Park from the docent as you ascend the steps up the top is interesting -but GO FOR THE VIEW!!

Off limits for decades -- The iconic California Tower has just opened for tours. Built in 1915 for the Panama-California Exposition (and an interesting rivalry with LA), the viewing deck is eight floors up and offers some awesome views of the city. With architecture inspired by Spanish churches, and wrought iron spiral staircases, the tower is really unique and would be great for anyone with even a passing interest in architecture. The tour last 40 minutes, with about 15 on the viewing deck.

You can purchase tickets there, though the tours are scheduled. Though I am not a fan of all the museums at Balboa Park, I would recommend bundling your ticket with the Museum of Man -- it is really interesting and the most worth-while one of the lot.

The California Tower was built in Balboa Park for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition. It has been closed to visitors for 80 years. San Diego has reopened the tower to tours for the 100th anniversary of the Exposition. You need reservations, as each group is limited in number. It's well worth visiting this piece of history and enjoying a 360 degree view of Balboa Park. A must see!
