Simply put, San Francisco is one of the top travel destinations on the planet. The clanging cable cars, Victorian row houses, quirky neighborhoods and gorgeous waterfront make this city by the bay many people's favorite. One of the best ways to experience San Francisco is to live like a local for a day. Rent a bike and head into Golden Gate Park. ... Read more
Drop by to stroll around the Japanese Tea Garden or visit the California Academy of Sciences (this being San Francisco: the world's greenest museum, with a 'living' roof). Cruise over to the Ferry Building and slurp down organic oysters, and munching local cheese and sustainably grown fruit for lunch before catching a ferry to Sausalito, Tiburon or Alcatraz (even locals love 'The Rock') for a quick jaunt. After eating yet another local, sustainable meal (think heirloom tomato salad, duck confit, truffle risotto) for dinner at any one of SF's eighty gazillion neighborhood restaurants, find a late-night cafe and talk politics, take a streetcar to AT&T Park for a Giants baseball game, check out an indie band or just pick a neighborhood and explore.

When to go

Bring a jacket to San Francisco. Especially in summer. The heavy fog rolls in around 3 or 4pm and can make temperatures drop to bone-chilling levels. Temperatures during the rest of the year are mild, and ... Read more
September - November are the sunniest time to visit, it's still cold at night but pleasant during the day. Spring is a close second-best time to go; winter can get damp and rainy, so, while it's no monsoon season, bring an umbrella and waterproof shoes.

Perfect quiet town, super easy to get around with breathtaking views. Weather is quite unpredictable though.

A typical view in San Francisco: a Go Car, down the street to Alcatraz in the distance.

San Francisco was my favorite American city before the Silicon Valley boom. Now? Unfortunately it's out of my budget, but virtually we are all living here

Without getting into a discussion concerning the relative merits of Los Angeles and San Francisco let's just say this is one of the cities that makes California a great place to live.

Wonderful city to visit! Got to come for a work conference, then stayed for a long weekend. Definitely check out the Ferry Building, take a ride to Sausalito, and see Fisherman's Wharf!

The San Francisco Bay Area, California, USA

San Francisco is obviously one of my most favorite cities since I live here. It's really quite beautiful with the cute Victorian houses like the Painted Ladies, the cable cars, the Pacific Ocean, and rolling hills.

The weather is always predictable. It's cool and breezy, so dress in layers, but we have very little rain, so expect dry days.

The food scene is phenomenal. You'll find food from every cuisine from around the world, made with some of the freshest, locally sourced ingredients. Everything is organic and artisinal...almost to a fault.

We have some fascinating sights like Alcatraz, and some cool museums, but it's more a city to relax, explore the neighborhoods, and take in the culture. We're a funky city with lots of unique festivals and "Only-in-San Francisco" type of events, so try to come May through October when the city really comes alive.

San Francisco makes a wonderful vacation spot too with so many day trips / side trip options as well including Napa/Sonoma Valley for wine tasting, Santa Cruz for the beach boardwalk and forests, or Tahoe for for the gorgeous lake or skiing/snowboarding.
