Becks Motor Lodge is by the Church and Castro MUNI stops and is a fun place to stay off of Market Street. The outside is painted yellow, orange, and purple and the rooms are designed with funky wall paper and interiors. The current owner’s grandfather built the motor lodge in 1956 and his caricature is in the lobby. Though the vibe of the hotel is old-school and retro, there is a lot of construction happening which has updated the interior of the rooms and the exterior of the building. Though the construction has made great changes, it is a bit loud and disruptive to current guests, so if you are planning on staying at Beck’s soon, check if construction is still happening. The staff is friendly and honest about the construction. The woman at the front desk reminded me of one of my favorite Gilmore Girl characters, and was definitely a character herself. I imagine in a place with so much personality that the other employees are just as animated. As for the rooms, they are large, roomy, bright, and have large showers. At the moment they are also a bit loud but that will end with construction.

As with many of the motor lodges in San Francisco, my best advice is to not judge accommodations by their exterior. Beck's Motor Lodge was tidy, surprisingly spacious, and home to a friendly staff. Located in the Castro, their website makes a specific point of saying they're welcoming to LGBTQ guests, which is a nice gesture, I think. Take the F line on Muni to get downtown easily, or explore the Castro and its charming streets bubbling with LGBTQ pride. The lodge was recently renovated, so rooms are fresh and clean-feeling, and contain features like air conditioning, refrigerators, and TVs, to name a few amenities.

This place just went through a renovation and the rooms are looking great, crisp and fun! I really like the area, you are in a perfect location to take the bus towards the cultural Mission district, explore the Castro and all its quirkiness, or head to downtown San Francisco to hit all the usual sightseeing spots.

It is a wonderful perk that it offers free parking. The rooms are large and have all the basic amenities one could ask for, such as free wi-fi, A/C and more. There is a huge deck on the second floor where you can hang out and take in some sunshine.
This area of Market Street is mostly quiet and is loaded with small businesses. There is a luggage shop right in front (how convenient!) A gym, several restaurants, a gift shop and two grocery stores are all within walking distance.

Be forewarned: this is no luxury hotel. It's a bare-bones motel whose main attraction is its location (right where the Castro meets the Mission and downtown, which also is a huge transit center) and its price. Famed for being a place for out-of-town gay men stay the night - or an hour - after clubbing in the Castro, it's also frequented by savvy travelers for whom location and price is more important than luxury. Case in point? This is where my parents stay when they visit me.
