In 1866 the US Army acquired the site for a military base. It is now a lovely resort at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge. It is set on 10 acres where you can hike, have broad vistas of the bay and San Francisco, stay in one of the historic rooms or the beautiful contemporary ones, you can spend the day at the wellness center, and dine in one of two restaurants. The wraparound porches at the main buildings are complete with rocking chairs where you can grab a drink and watch the sun go down.

Cavallo Point is a resort-style area in the Sausalito area just north of Golden Gate Point. Here there is a hotel, restaurant, as well as accommodations for people staying for a longer time. Valet and self parking are available, and there is a really nice view of the city.

If being eco-friendly without sacrificing luxury is top on your priority list, you won’t want to miss the Bay Area’s Cavallo Point. And the best part? You can bring your four-legged friend along with you for a little green getaway. After a romp around the Golden Gate National Recreational Area, your pooch will appreciate the Eco Luxe Pups program, which provides locally made lush bedding, a quick-dry towel, custom food and water bowls, and plenty of treats and cookies (organic, of course).

This luxury resort has two different types of rooms, Historic and Contemporary, and we stayed in a "Contemporary King Suite" room (see the photos). Although it looked plain and somewhat unattractive from ourside the building, the room was well maintained, clean, and comfortable, and it was big enough for two adults and two small children. The view of Golden Gate bridge from the room (which I believe most rooms have) made it special -- note that from some rooms, view may be partially blocked by surrounding tall trees, so you may want to check it when making reservation.

There is a small pier about five minutes walk from the resort where you can see the bridge upclose from its base. It's an excellent place for a great photos, but it often gets foggy in the morning, and when we last visited in May, the bridge was completely covered and invisible early in the morning.

We did like the resort's restaurant, Murray Circle, very much with its upscale ambiance and excellent food.

Imagine two totally disparate vacations: an historic lodge (formerly military barracks) on national park grounds, tucked in between imposing hills and a white-capped bay. Now imagine one of the world's most popular cities (San Francisco) with a hotel just across one of the world's most popular landmarks (the Golden Gate Bridge), with a Michelin-starred restaurant (Murray Circle), a 1940s-style glamorous bar (Farley's), cooking school and world-class spa. It's spendy, but if you're looking for quality and value, it's worth it. Plus, during the week, they have all sorts of great deals.

Beautiful local for the green hotel. The property offers exceptional views of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge. You can enjoy the grounds without staying at the hotel by having a drink and maybe a meal in their restaurant.

Lovely views, a fantastic place to go on fog free Sausalito evenings. We love to sit on the porch out side Farley's with a glass of wine and have a light dinner.

With a prime location in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Cavallo Point blends old and new to great effect. The restored buildings of Fort Baker, a former U.S. army base, house its 142 rooms and suites. And there’s plenty to do on site, beginning with a Healing Arts Center & Spa, an organic Tea Bar, a cooking school, and yoga classes.

Room to Book: The Historic Deluxe with View rooms in the Contemporary building have just that—sweeping panoramas of the San Francisco Bay—along with gas fireplaces, buttery-leather armchairs, and vintage crown molding.

Insider Tip: Try the hotel’s healing arts services, which range from acupuncture to clinical massage, hypnotherapy to energy work.

What a location! I did not stay here but I was on the property for a dinner. The property has a great view of Gold Gate Bridge and San Francisco. I live in the city but it was a treat to go to this property. Maybe I will stay here for a special occasion!
