Tonight I had to stop in here by myself. There is a happy hour menu that has $1.50 for Hama oysters. Regularly is $2.50 each and $3.50 for Kumamoto oysters. I got one lamb skewer $4.98 and Tenderloin Cubes dish $13.50 are good meat dishes. I wanted to order the shishito peppers but the other table ordered the last of it. Last call is at 10pm in Sunday through Thursday. An order of white rice is extra and does not come with your entree order. There is already 15% added to any bill for helping with spreading the tips to the cooks and back house staff. At least that was explained before my credit card was processed.

I really love the variety selection of food here. i literally wanted to try every dish!
i shared all these with a female friend and it was a good portion of food for us:
6 oysters, short ribs (it was good but took a while to make, we waited at least 30 mins), abalone fried rice, beef tataki (my fav!), and special chicken heart (my fav as well!).
service was decent, wish they came to check on us just a bit more, it was hard to get their attention since they were so busy.
overall the place is gorgeous (kinda hipster-ish? haha) and parking was easy since it's located in the same plaza as hilton hotel.
the only thing i wasn't super happy about was that we split the check and they automatically added 15% without informing us. not that we were planning to tip lower than 15% (unless the service was bad) but it felt like we were forced to pay 15%?
it's just a weird thing that i've never encountered at a restaurant unless i was with a group of 6, other than that the food was fantastic!

Great place to have a higher class Chinese meal that actually focuses more on the food quality and service. It's a great spot to have lunch business meetings since it's a bit more quiet and you can actually talk without other customers disturbing you.

They have a good selection of food as well. Some orders are small but some come with a good amount of food. I will come again.

Met up some friends here for a small get together last Sat for lunch. I've never been to this part of town before but I heard this place was really nice. I expected the restaurant to be on the first or second floor of the plaza, alas it was on the third floor. It was really hard to locate if you aren't familiar with the area. The signage was hard to see from the bottom floor and there are so many stores and restaurants in this one plaza alone.

Chang'an's interior is very beautiful and furnished so nicely. It looks like an upscale restaurant to take your date to! They even have seating outside if you want a little sun with your meal. I love their industrial lights and cushion seating inside. There's even a bar area if you prefer to watch the chef in action. Plenty of space to host a birthday party. The waitress at the front desk was very friendly and helpful with our orders. Our drinks were always filled and I was so stuffed by the end of our meal.

Highlights of my meal: I really enjoyed the Shou-Si Chicken (very soft and tender, not at all spicy), Lamb shoulder skewer $6 (delicious, lean and savory), Weijiao Tofu $6 (love, love, LOVE this dish! Doesn't taste vegetarian. Reminds me a lot like Cheesesticks maybe because of the garlic. Plus it's $6) and Kobe Style Beef Tataki $15/$28 (tender and flavorful). I didn't like their baked pumpkin with salted egg yolk. It had a weird texture and some flavor combination that I'm not quite use to.

Overall I'm very impressed with the ambiance and the quality of the food. Not a lot of restaurants can look this pretty and have great distinctive food. Plus Chinese restaurants aren't really known for their decor and service. Will definitely come back to try out the rest of the menu!

Hidden on the 3rd floor of the Hilton Plaza, this gem of a restaurant offers authentic, modern Chinese cuisine in a setting best described as modern industrial chic. The brick walls, wooden table tops, and exposed ceiling combined with its sleek, glossy black booth seating create an ambience unlike any other Chinese restaurant in the neighborhood. You almost forget you're in the San Gabriel Valley when dining here, because it has such a west-side, hipster vibe!

The food is amazing, to say the least. Their plate presentation was beautiful, and every dish was introduced with great appetizing appeal.I was able to try a grand selection of their menu offerings including some of my favorites: The Signature salad,Seafood Spring rolls, Crispy Jidori Chicken, and the Braised Pork Belly! All of those are must haves! You will not be let down. Also, the watermelon juice they serve is made fresh with 100% real watermelon fruit! It's not the fake kind that most tea places offer. I would highly recommend that if you like watermelon!

On another note, they also have a a nice outdoor patio that would be perfect for hosting private parties! It's decorated with hanging string lights, which I love! I am definitely going to recommend this place to all my friends! You can't beat delicious Chinese food that is decently priced, along with friendly service. Not to mention, they also offer great happy hour deals! Go visit Chang' An tonight! You'll thank me later.

Excellent food, huge variety from meats to seafood to veggie. It's in a beautiful setting, too. Great for a date, or a hang with some friends. Even good for a bunch foodies poring over camera phones before diving in. It's been put together by a sweet couple who strive to create a sense of community - and yet, it's very much open to all. From the hand-picked music by the Chef/co-owner, to the design of the space by the Hostess/co-owner, there are many personal touches here. Thankfully, they have great taste.

The food is fresh and delicious. Well worth making a trip to San Gabriel. Fun, lively, and sleek.

A number of foodies (me included) were invited to have lunch at Chang'an in Alhambra. Here are my thoughts on the food that I had that I enjoyed. The duck appetizer tasted pretty traditionally like duck. It was a very well flavored dish... However, I did find a couple of small bones in it that I didn't expect. One of my Chinese dining partners mentioned that the bones were there on purpose and that a lot of Chinese dishes have bones because many Chinese people like to chew on the bones. Being American, when items have a lot of unexpected bones, the bones become a slight distraction from the food. So pardon me for pointing out the bones that I found in the dishes. Especially when the food looks and smells as good as the food does here... You just want to go at it and really dig in! The grilled beef tongue was thinly sliced, really good and well-seasoned. Thank God there's no bones in a typical tongue! The kobe style beef tataki had a nice rich steak flavor because it was slice thinly and seared with a hint of horseradish but nothing overpowering. The sweet and sour pork spareribs had a wonderful slightly sweet sauce and I wanted to dig in but many of the pieces also had a bone attached so I felt like I couldn't chow down on it as strongly as I wanted to. This might've been my favorite out of all of the dishes. I wanted the whole plate to myself! The filet mignon beef and lamb skewers reminded me of a Brazilian restaurant--The pieces came on skewers and they were tender and flavorful( and boneless). The pork belly dish with potatoes was very well prepared, it was served on a big plate and was a nice large portion. The pork belly had a nice gravy on top and was cooked to perfection and the small potato pieces were well seasoned. I love scallops, so the scallops on the skewer we're good, but perhaps they needed a little bit of a dipping sauce? The Chang'an signature salad was really good and I had 2 helpings of it. It was served with a perfect peanut and sesame dressing. The deep-fried tofu was light and melted in your mouth--I don't usually eat tofu but I went back for a second helping because it was so tasty. The grilled okra was fresh and the price makes it a smart appetizer. The baked squash w/salted egg yolk had an unexpected texture that was light and crispy, you could taste the egg in a good way, but it wasn't overpowering. The fried chicken was served in a cute little basket, it looked and tasted so good but I had a hard time finding a piece they didn't have too many small bones in it. Their braised eggplant w/prawns is a full plate of flavors that really work together. It's a large portion for a great price. Finally, the tri-color cold noodles, bean sprouts and chicken had a fresh flavor that is great year round but nice for a spring or summer day.

Chang'an Restaurant is a place one can go to for a drink at the bar, a romantic dinner date, or even a party for large groups. The interior exudes modernity and class, and the cuisine strives to be authentically Chinese, with an upscale touch. The professionals who run the place are very passionate about providing an exquisite culinary experience.

While each dish is exquisitely made, the portions are not that small. Here are my personal favorites:

For Starters, I'd recommend the WEIJIAO TOFU. The texture is soft and it feels like it melts in your mouth.

Everything on the grill is tasty, so you can't go wrong with any of the choices. Go with what you crave. My personal favorite is the KOBE STYLE BEEF TATAKI. It's lightly seared, so you get that texture of semi-raw meat without the bloodiness.

As for the main dishes, go for the BRAISED PORK BELLY and the COLD NOODLES. The braised pork belly is soft and layered, easy to cut and break apart to fit in your mouth. The cold noodles come in three colors, mixed with bean sprouts, shredded chicken and cucumber along with a sauce that satisfies your sweet and salty taste buds.

Aside from the food, the ambience of the place sets the tone for a good time with the people you dine with. It's brilliantly pleasant.

This place is Wonderful! The restaurant serves very traditional Chinese dishes with the taste and presentation of culinary greatness!
The food is wonderfully made, and very well presented in this gem hidden in the SGV. The location itself is privately located on the 3rd floor of a plaza next to the Hilton Hotel. Parking is free and conveniently located via the parking structure that goes down to the lower levels. You can access the restaurant once you find the elevator that takes you to the 3rd floor. The mood of the restaurant is very casual but classy and can make you feel welcomed when you enter it. The service is very good and the restaurant even has a huge bar and outdoor patio. They serve alcohol, sake, and fine wine. Highly recommend this place if you are looking to try Chinese cuisine with the presentation and service of restaurants found in Hollywood!

Wow, the food here is so yummy! I like that they aren’t branding their restaurant as authentic Chinese or Chinese fusion but ‘’New Authentic Chinese Food”. It sounds ridiculous and a little redundant but trust me, it’s pretty damn good authentic Chinese Food. What’s even more great is that their plating and décor is beautiful and makes Instagram photos a breeze.

Located on the third floor of this plaza. Its kinda hard to find but once you get there, the inside atmosphere does not match where it should belong. This place has beautiful decor and shows off the style of what this place actually is. It represents the luxury of modern Chinese businesses with lots of delicacies of traditional Chinese dishes from the mainland that you don't get at any other restaurants. Priced accordingly to its decor, the food is also presented well and tastes just as good.

Used with finer ingredients with a chefs touch, they do show off what it is to be tasting an actual Chinese chef's dish. Forget eating anywhere else, when food comes beautifully done to be taken photos first before the taste.

Some of the dishes to be noted to try are the;

Beef tataki - a delicious citrus flavor that can be taken with one bite because it's smooth and thin.

Steamed scallops with crystal noodles - presentation is well thought out and should be eaten quickly. The scallop is just the right size and flavor has garlic yet subtle flavor.

Short ribs - more like braised ribs but so silky that it falls off the bone so it is prepared well and has a sweet Asian bbq flavor. Paired with pea snaps veggies.

Tried two types of skewers like the lamb shoulder and the filet mignon. Both has its feng mao style flavoring with chili powder and salted enough that you don't need to add your own. Its priced higher as you don't have to do any work but meat cut size is bigger than your avg place.

Braised eggplants with pine nuts - is made to come with shrimp in the dish but doesn't say so on the menu. This dish has edible flowers which goes well with the cooked just right on the egglplants and stirfried. The shrimp is marinated well and has the same flavor has the veggie portion.

Shou-si chicken - like a spicy style hainan chicken without the bones. It pairs well by itself and especially with rice.

These are some of the known dishes to try but have not had a dish there I didn't like.

Western decoration & service, Eastern authentic food. It's one of most romantic Chinese restaurant in SGV area. They use all Chinese chefs to create Chinese fusion with good taste and good presentation. Come here for wine tasting or late night drinks would be enjoyable as well. They have nice indoor seats, bars and outdoor patio, locating on the 3rd fl of the Hilton plaza.

I had a chance to come here with friends the other day for lunch. Chang'an refers to the name of the old capital in China, and is supposed to be a throwback of the old supper clubs, a gastropub, and a neighborhood bar. Jazz music in the background, nicely apportioned bar, and plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, it's a great place to meet for lunch, drinks, or a date night.

Chang'an isn't an "authentic" regional Chinese restaurant. It puts together something new, something old, and sometimes something borrowed. The owners and executive chef have been meticulous in designing the menu and putting together the dishes and telling a story.

The first course was the Chang'an salad, one of their signature dishes. This is definitely new and different. It's made of daisy leaves, which is bitter and usually cooked in hot pot. But this is served raw in a house made peanut and sesame dressing. It's similar in taste to arugula, and delicious.

We also had the Gui Hua Ou, a sliced lotus root stuffed with sweet rice. I don't like lotus roots generally, but just I appreciate the craftsmanship of stuffing the holes with sweet rice and cooked in a sweet sauce.

I really liked the lamb shoulder skewer. Nicely seasoned with a lot of cumin, and served on the skewer itself. Great dish to share with friends.

Another great dish to share is the weijiao tofu, silken tofu cubes that are deep fried, seasoned in salt and black pepper. Soft on the inside with a nice seasoned crust on the outside.

The cold noodles should not be missed. You can order this as a vegetarian item. Tri-colored hand made noodles, bean sprouts, and cucumber and served with a sesame and peanut sauce. The noodles have a nice bite, so you know they're handmade. I appreciate these kinds of attention to details.

The last main course was also something that I can't even identify if it's completely made up or from a particular region of China. The baked pumpkin with salted egg yolk is deep fried wedges of the sweet pumpkin and salty duck egg yolks. Just a crazy combination of textures and flavors. This is another great dish to share with friends.

I really enjoyed the ambience and the food and would definitely recommend a trip here with a date or friends or if you're looking for a nice place to hang out.

In the SGV area, there are so many Chinese restaurants. Many of those places are known more for food and not much for service, ambiance, and atmosphere.

Chang'an definitely is able be on point with basically every aspect of food and hospitality. I came here recently for lunch and tried their dishes.

Chang'An Signature Salad: I love their peanut sauce dressing for this salad!

Gui Hua Ou: These are lotus roots stuffed with sweet rice. I like the sweet taste of it!

Shou-si Chicken: The chicken was very good and very fresh. THe sauce was very well complimented

Lamb Skewer: The lamb skewer was very tender and lots of delicious seasoning!

Kobe style Beef Tataki: I loveee tataki beef and the sauce made it taste great!

Grilled beef tongue: My FAVORITE! I love how tender the beef tongue was and how well marinated it was.

Weijiao tofu: This was deep fried silken tofu, seasoned with black pepper and sea salt. There was a garlic sauce that accompanied it. The tofu was very well seasoned and I like the small cubes, so it was easy to eat.

Baby pork ribs: I recommend you having this was a bowl of rice. The sauce of the ribs was sweet and complimented well with the ribs.

Baked pumpkin with salted egg yolk: This was deep fried and had a good salty taste to it from the egg.

The best part about this place is that it is perfect for dates and the food is really reasonably priced. GREAT prices for fresh quality and delicious food and great service. I honestly can't ask for anymore. This place is definitely become one of my favorites and hidden gems of the San Gabriel Valley area! This will definitely be my next date spot!
