Description
This crazy curiosity just outside of downtown San Jose is the whimsical dream/nightmare of Sarah Winchester, heiress of the Winchester Rifle fortune. Sure that the spirits of those killed by ... Read more
Winchester Rifles were haunting her, she built a winding maze of a mansion to confuse the spirits and live in peace. Unfortunately for her, a house this fantastical would drive even the most sane crazy. With stairs that lead to nowhere, corridors that loop back on themselves, and doors that open into nothing, any tour of the house will be interesting, to be sure. For maximum "spooky", take a midnight tour on Halloween.

Very unique place, especially if you are into architecture! The guides are all super knowledgeable and friendly. I highly recommend doing the “Explore More” tour to gain access to some places only open to the public since 2017! It’s not necessarily “scary” as some may make it seem, it’s great for kids of any age.

I am a huge fan of history and the bizarre. This place definitely has both. I have been on two tours of this house and learn something every time I come here. It is a fascinating place that includes the mansion, a gift shop, rifle museum, and restaurant. I do not believe in ghosts, but I swear that when I went on my last tour, I felt a presence there. As the tour guide took me and the rest of the guests past the bedroom where Sarah Winchester passed away, I felt like someone touched the back of my shoulder. I looked behind me and there was no one there....spooky!!!

This eccentric home is a nice stop when in the area, but If you cant do small spaces i would avoid it because there's a lot of small spaces you have to walk through and in to. Check Groupon for a deal.

Fun place to go, but a little expensive. They have some games and fun things to do while waiting for the tour.

The mansion tour is a great family activity in San Jose that's also close to Valley Fair and Santana Row (malls). Sarah Winchester listened to a clairvoyant, who told her she was being haunted by the souls of individuals killed by Winchester rifles. She built the house with stair cases and stairs that wind, sometimes ending at a ceiling or to the exterior wall so that spirits couldn't get to her (they travel in straight lines). They also have an add-on to the tour - Explore More - that lets you into areas of the house that are newly opened to the public. The restorations done to keep the house as it is are quite extraordinary. It's fun to step back in time.

I don't recommend bringing little ones that you have to carry in your arms. You walk quite a bit on the mansion tour and there are quite a few stairs that have different heights.

It was really fun to see the staircases that go nowhere and the door that opens to nothing. I was not as scared as I thought i would be. It's definitely family friendly.

The Winchester Mystery House is super cool! I love the history and the quirky details. Best of all, it's a real, historical sight, even though it seems more like a fun house with stairs to nowhere and windows in the floor.

This was the fourth or fifth time we've visited the Winchester Mystery House. We took the combined tour this time so we had a chance to see parts of the estate we hadn't seen before. A must see.

It seems crazy over priced but it is so hyped and popular that it is worth going on just so you can experience it. The history and stories are interesting.

This was the Left Bank table at the Fall Wine and Food Festival - Oct 8, 2015. I highly recommend and wine and/or food lovers to attend this event next time.

So much fun! The stories about the house are great... The number 13, the lady trapped in a room! The house itself is amazing! If you like spooky houses, or if you just love some funky architecture, this is the place to go!

Winchester Mystery House is a haunted house founded by the same man who built the Winchester Rifle, built to run away from the spirits of the dead killed by the very rifle.

Overpriced poorly executed tourist-trap. The rooms are empty and all look the same. The guide we had spoke so fast no one could understand her even after we asked her to slow down. I absolutely love historical tours but this was awful.

Touring the Winchester Mystery House is a bit on the expensive side, but it's a pretty unique spot. The house is filled with staircases that go nowhere and spots that were used for spying on the servants. If you're into antiques, some of the original Tiffany stained glass windows are quite impressive.

The story of the Winchester Mystery House is as fascinating as the house itself. As the story goes, the heiress to the house spent her family fortune continually adding to the home in the belief if work stopped on the house, something tragic would happen. I usually try to stop by here if I'm road tripping between LA and SF with my siblings.

Just off of highway 280 in San Jose is a strange house built by a window who inherited the Winchester Rifle fortune. Told by a fortune teller that she would not die as long as she could hear the sound of hammers building on her house, she built a house that could only be built with equal parts of money and crazy. Construction started around 1884 and continued for nearly 38 years round the clock. It has staircases and doors to nowhere, bejeweled windows created to catch the light that are now on interior walls and secret rooms where she could spy on her servants. The two most common stupid questions asked by tourists are "why did they build it so close to the freeway" and "how many rooms haven't been discovered yet".

I kept discovering everything hidden and mysterious about the house before the tour guide got to talking about it! She was nice about it, though. Probably happens a lot. It was definitely fun and educational, and made me become interested in the story of this crazy house.

It's a very interesting house with a fascinating story, and while it costs a pretty penny to enter, I thought it was worth it. I went on just the mansion tour, though you can go on a tour of both the mansion and the estate. There were a few kids on my tour who seemed to enjoy it as well.

No pictures allowed in the home, no big deal....books and internet are full of pictures.

What's the point....Sarah Winchester was a remarkable woman who was way ahead of her time. She built a home that was perfect for her and for what she was seeking...or hiding from, I should say....need to make those pesky spirits happy, ya know..

From the staircases to the grounds, the number 13 is all over, which I love, by the way. The attention to detail from the wallpaper to the craftmanship in the wood is beyond words!! Not to mention some interesting and funky cold spots along the tour which I chucked up to waking around in a old house, but you never know..
