The best (and cheapest) places to eat in San Pedro de Atacama are the food stalls that are a bit off the centre of town. There's a wide selection of different kinds of food which is all made to order. Highly recommended for travelers on a budget!

Want to try some truly local food? Traveling on the cheap? Ok with sticking out like a sore thumb? Check out Atacama's street food scene. A block north of the Plaza de Armas, next to the giant, copper-funded soccer field and gymnasium, and amidst the various bus companies' stations, a rickety collection of food stalls offer breakfast, lunch and dinner for 1000-2500 pesos. We chose one whose plastic chairs were fullest with locals, and were well attended by a spunky, mostly toothless lady. The food was good - I ordered pollo al horno with rice and salad. The rice was flavorful and the chicken was perfectly cooked. My friend ordered Picado de gallina, which we had no idea what it was, and it was a plate piled high with chicken, potatoes, salad, and this gray potato dish we'd never seen before. I liked it well enough to come back for breakfast a couple days later and ordered a simple eggs and bread. It was served in a little pot, and the eggs were obviously fresh and local - their yolks were a brilliant gold. If you speak no spanish you may have to stumble along and make guesses about what each dish is, since no english is spoken here, but it will be a delicious - and cheap! - adventure.

The local food stalls are where you can eat the cheapest. They are all together next to the soccer field so they are easy to find. The food is very good, tasty and 100% local, in fact it is the people of the area who most frequent them. Find a space between plastic tables and chairs and enjoy a Chilean meal at the best price.
