Description
Preserved under layers of volcanic ash, Joya de Cerén was a small, pre-Hispanic farming community that was abandoned in AD 600 due to the eruption of Loma Caldera, a nearby volcano. Much like Pompeii, ... Read more
the ash left an impeccably intact village that gives anthropologists a clear insight into this civilization's cultures and practices. Residents of Joya de Cerén were able to flee prior to the eruption, but a number of utensils, farming tools, ceramics and more were left behind. Discovered in 1976, this archeological find was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site 17 years later in 1993.

A fascinating insight into Central American/Mayan history and culture. The archaeological park is situated near San Salvador so we were able to go there and back in a day trip very easily. The site is very well preserved and the staff are very knowledgeable and passionate about Mayan history and culture. it was one of the highlights of our time whilst in San Salvador and well worth the trip outside the city.

This is apparently the only UNESCO site in El Savador. The site is an archaeological ruin of ancient farmhouses of a small community. What I loved about this place were the multitude of fruit trees. There were mango (they are everywhere in El Savador), cashew, cocoa trees and more. Our guide brought a tripod and we used it to pick fruit from the trees. It was so much fun! Tip: Put on sunblock and bring a personal. Be prepared to sweat a lot because each of the sites were covered by metal roof and overheat very easily.

One of the most interesting Mayan sites in Central America, mostly because instead of showing temples it actually shows houses and one gets a good idea of the daily lives of the people who lived in the region. I really recommend to go.

Not to miss when you are in El Salvador. A unique and very interesting archeological sight. It offers an insight into daily life an common people unlike the temples found in Guatemala and Mexico.
