Get the Godmother sandwich. It’s their most popular item but explore the many sides and deserts available too.

True local eatery landmark. Been around for 90 years and one of the best sandwiches - the godmother you will find anywhere. Be prepared for a long line!

The Godmother. That's all I have to say. This place makes the ultimate sandwich. You simply can't visit L.A. without making a pit stop at this incredible deli. The bread is the real star of the show, freshly baked, crispy on the outside, perfectly flaky on the inside. Seriously. I didn't know a sandwich could be so perfect until I tried this place.

Yes! Yes! Yes! This tasty New York style deli is worth the wait. Grab a number near the deli counter and wait your turn. P.S. If you're on your phone, they're moving on… Have your order ready!

Bay Cities is likely the best Deli in SoCal. I love their selection of cheeses & sandwiches.

I am not a huge sandwich person but my co-workers go NUTS for this place. They love the bread and the "Godfather" is the favorite.

I would recommend to pre order your sandwich online before picking it up. Sandwiches are fantastic but if you hit the lunch rush hour it's gonna be pretty hectic. The food is well worth it though.

There's parking with an attendant to keep things moving. eat there or grab for your lunch at the beach. Closed on Mondays.

I just happened to be in the area one Sunday afternoon so my sister and I decided to finally give it a try.

I do have to caveat that I'm not a sandwich person, nor do I eat pork, which essentially means 1 - high expectations and 2- I wasn't ordering the Godmother.

After squeezing into a tiny parking spot (seriously - I impressed myself), we walked into the crowded shop a little confused. Luckily, someone pointed out the number system and the ten minute wait gave me plenty of time to find the menu and decide what to get.

My sister ordered a chicken parm and I opted for a pastrami. My sister ate her sandwich about an hour later (we live in Cerritos) but I waited a few hours to eat mine.

The chicken parm was really good. The flavors were well balanced, and the overall sandwich was messy but enjoyable. Bread was a tad hard.

I LOVED the pastrami, although I do have to echo that the bread didn't seem very fresh. Even after a few hours of sitting, it was still chewy, indicating that it wasn't that soft to begin with.

Have I been converted to a sandwich lover? Ehhh. But I would totally go back and get just pastrami from the deli. And of course wander the aisles for any and every type of Italian ingredient I could possibly want for my kitchen.

PS The shop is small and crowded. Ditto with the parking lot.

A Classic! Maybe the oldest real Italian Deli in LA. Get a famous Godmother, or my favorite - the eggplant parmesan or caprese sandwich! Here's a secret for locals to avoid the wait - order online and then go pick it up - it's made in the back and there is no wait!

The hordes of people waiting to order their sandwiches during busy lunch hours at this Italian food paradise, which has been around since 1925, can be overwhelming. Those in the know order online and pick up their sandwiches from the pick up counter on the other side of the store. Try the most popular sandwich, the “Godmother”, if you like cold cuts. There are also daily specials such as Eggplant Parmigiana. Pick up desserts and drinks at the gourmet store and you’re set for a picnic on the beach. 1517 Lincoln Blvd, Santa Monica.

Save some money by ordering the chicken salad or tuna salad thats already pre-packaged and a fresh slice of bread! It'll come out to less than 4 bux for an awesome chicken salad sandwich.

Okay so I read the reviews and got their most famous sandwich, the GODMOTHER. It wasn't all that it was cracked up to be. The sandwich is okay, I didn't like the bread it was pretty hard to bite down on it. So it made eating the sandwich a bit tough. The large GODMOTHER w/the works was 8.80. I think its just an average sandwich to me, and I don't see why it was so special. Here's a tip, to avoid the longggg lines make sure to order onlineyour sandwich about 45 minutes before you decide to come pick up so that you don't have to wait. You just need to go to the wine section and pick up your sandwich and pay and eat outside. The big plus is that it has its own parking lot!

Santa Monica’s unassuming Bay Cities Italian Deli is best known for giant sandwiches with names like The Godmother. But it’s the deli’s eight-cheese mac that L.A. Weekly singles out as the area’s number one dish of its kind. If you choose to battle the shop’s long lunch lines, be sure to order the baked version—fans on Yelp warn the macaroni side dish isn’t nearly as tasty.

Be a local and stand in line at Bay Cities. Grab sandwiches for the beach or prepared food from the hot deli counter and bring it home for dinner. The fresh bread is a Santa Monica favorite and the cheese section is great. All things Italian. Parking is tough around the lunch hour. Closed on Mondays.

There are a lot of Italians in the valley so I'm spoiled by the authentic Italian sandwiches in my area. Bay Cities is just average to me. The bread is way too hard. I don't enjoy have the roof of my mouth all cut up by hard ass bread.

We ordered the famous Godmother, spicy and with the works. Our sandwich was dripping wet. I didn't enjoy how soggy my sandwich was but all the liquid did help soften the crazy hard bread crust up a little. The meat quality was good.

I like that they have a big drink case and you can buy pretty unique beers by the bottle. They also have grocery items and kitchen gadgets. The store gets crazy crowded on a weekend during lunch so make sure you get a number before you start browsing the store.

They have benches outside for you to sit and enjoy your meal. The best part is the convenient parking at no charge.

If your a sandwich fan, this place is a must visit. There are a variety of sandwiches to choose from but the must have is the Godmother. The Godmother has Genoa Salami, Mortadella Cappacola, Ham and Prosciutto as well as Provolone. The "The Works version of this sandwich includes mayo, mustard, onions, pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, homemade Italian dressing and pickled hot or mild peppers. I would recommend getting "The Works" and make sure its a large. The taste of this beast will have diving in from the start. I wash this tasteful delight down with a ginger beer.

The service is great, just make sure you take a number. The staff is nice and friendly as well, and will make sure that you are taken care of.

Parking can be adventurous, as this place can get busy. The wait is well worth it, as the meal you will throw down will cater to your hunger needs.
