Local from Providencia

This hotel’s location is great: it is located in front of Santa Lucía hill, in the Santiago Centro commune. It is close to the Lastarria neighborhood, which includes hip bars, pubs, restaurants and clothing stores. There is nothing hip about this hotel, though. Its decoration is grandma-style: it is very old-fashioned. However, I kind of like this style. The rooms are not too big but each comes with a bedroom and a living room (floral couches included). The staff is super friendly and helpful. So I would definitely recommend this place for families who are looking for a nice area to stay at and a team of people who will cater their needs. Also business travelers will be close to central Santiago but without being immerse in the craziness that is downtown.

I loved this hotel. My visit showed me the importance of what it means to receive great service from people who treat their guests well. I was looked after as though I was going to stay for an entire year. All of the rooms come equipped with an extra space, which works as a kind of living room and which was furnished with a TV, refrigerator and small sofa, which was the perfect place to sit and converse. I would recommend that anyone who decides to stay in this hotel to visit the bar next door (which is actually owned by the hotel) called, El Bar de Rodrigo. I loved the fact that this bar seems to have been trapped in the past. It was the perfect place to chat the evening away. I also really liked the location of the restaurant on the top floor, as it had a wonderful panoramic view of Santa Lucia hill. The cost of the stay was also very reasonable.

The winning factor of this hotel is its undeniable, singular quality. This place is unique. I loved the old-style feel to the hotel (still set in its ways dating back to the 70s in terms of decor and style) the hotel rooms were furnished with red velvet sofas, heavy tapestries and carpets, long blackout curtains and a full-size knight in armour in the lounge. It was so full of character that I wanted to go snooping through all the halls to find my very own wardrobe from “The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.” The restaurant is cheaper than most of the restaurants in the area and it serves up all the traditional chilean dishes you could want to try. I also really liked the fact that the hotel is family owned and run. This is not a place for anyone who liked modern living, by any means, but it’s the perfect place for anyone who loves that homely feel.

This hotel has been here forever and one gets the feeling that it's relying on the nostalgia of its long-term loyal clients to keep it busy. There are things to like about the hotel: The rooms are large and most actually have a separate sitting room. The location is great – it's right on the border of the wonderful Lastarria neighborhood. The dining room upstairs has an enjoyable view of the park on Cerro Santa Lucia. The piano bar on the second floor is fun. The price is right. The staff is friendly. But the rooms are a little musty, the floorboards are dirty, and the carpets should have been replaced long ago. The included breakfasts are extremely simple, and if you want anything more than bread or a boiled egg or fruit, your room is charged. The elevator is so tiny it's hard to fit a third person in it. I guess I'm just disappointed – this old hotel could be really great, with a little investment and sprucing up. Instead you get the feeling they're resting on their aging laurels.

The first person I met at the Foresta was an elderly gentlemen from Kansas that told me that he has been coming to this hotel for decades and currently him and his wife were finishing a month stay at the hotel. All the good things he said about the hotel I found to be true - very clean, good service, the restaurant has good food, nice piano bar, and the best is that it is directly in front of Santa Lucia hill (park and castle). The downside of the hotel it just has a vibe for an older crowd and coincidentally, most all of the guest were above 50 if not 60. The only real complaint though the "reading room" felt more like my aunt Joan's living room, where it was more of a display room with rules of things you could not touch or do than a place to get comfortable and relax.
