This place doesn't really deserve four stars, maybe not even three, but it's going to get them from me anyway because I love love love the garden - and its devoted gardener. You can tell that once upon a time, someone put a lot of love and money into this hotel – its collection of antiques and Japanese art in the lounge and dining areas lend it an air of elegance – but you can also tell it's been allowed to get run down. The carpets could use a replacing, there's some graffiti on the outside wall, the floorboards are a little dirty. But the caretaker of the hotel has not neglected the back garden and patio. Instead, he has poured himself into it, and the show of colorful flowers and healthy plants are the spectacular result of such love. I really hope that at some point, the owners find the staff and the money to fix up the rest of this hotel, so it can be restored to the elegance it once knew. I'm rooting for it.

This is a hard review to write because I think good people deserve good things. Someone put a lot of time and effort into creating this once charming and enchanting small Japanese inspired hotel and I think at its best it probably was a wonderful retreat. However, the passion for this place seems to be on a life line. It is in bad need of some new capital for updating carpets, cleaning the exterior and perhaps for new beds and linens. In addition, the Hotel Tokyo, needs a fresh spirit to bring back the original flair and style of the owner. Some of the high points is the wonderful garden out back, it seems to call to you to grab a book, kick up your feet and wonder in and out of sleep for a whole afternoon. In conclusion, the hotel is decent and clean but in need of some TLC and I really hope it gets it.

Two observatories offer spectacular views of Tokyo from the Tokyo Tower, which was designed after the Eiffel Tower but is orange, and stretches 42 feet higher (not that anyone's counting). Built in 1958, the tower sees a constant flux of tourists, supports radio and TV antennae, while directly underneath is "FootTown" housing a restaurant and wax museum, among other attractions.
