Description
Even people who aren't fans of poetry are moved by the homes of Pablo Neruda, the renowned Chilean poet who won the Nobel Prize for Literature. Neruda built the house in 1955 to resemble a ship, and ... Read more
named it for his third wife's abundant and messy red hair. Neruda was a whimsical designer and collector, and the house is filled with his collection of things that pleased him, from the antique encyclopedia he purchased with part of his Nobel winnings to piles of colored glass. The home was severely vandalized after the military coup in 1973, but in the 1980s was restored as a museum to Neruda's life. The poet poured his soul into his homes, and visitors are left with an understanding of why his poetry has touched so many people. $3.500 pesos entrance.

In the interest of full disclosure, I'm not a big fan of Pablo Nerudas, because of his extremist political views (Neruda was a member of the Communist party). And communism was responsible for the deaths of over a hundred million innocent people during the 20th century (according to the book, The Black Book on Communism"). But, if you're in Santiago, you should visit his old neighborhood of Barrio Belavista and see La Chascona.

Of the three houses Pablo Neruda had in Chile this is my second favorite. If you are wanting to know the history and culture of Chile, skip the downtown area and head here. Pablo Neruda, was a Nobel Prize winning poet, and Chilean diplomat who died shortly after the military coup. His home is full of his eclectic collections, his sense of humor and his own personal style and design. This is one of my favorite places in Santiago.
