The McDowell Mountains are located on the northern side of Maricopa County, making them a kind of secret-in-plain-sight. This beautiful ribbon of ridges makes for a gorgeous backdrop, and I look forward to spending more time among these foothills. The Scottsdale Marriott has everything a Scottsdale hotel should have: easy access to golf courses, an epic outdoor pool area, ample event spaces (self-help gurus would love this place) and palatial rooms. (I found the coloration is a little beige and the art a little cheesy, but that's just nitpicking). I wouldn't get married here myself, but I can imagine a very scenic ceremony on the hotel's green. Scottsdale is replete with superior resorts, and this one is a bit farther from the Scottsdale cultural and shopping scene, but if you're interested in a morning hike, this location is pretty primo.

This hotel is gorgeous! It overlooks the McDowell Mountains and is stunning. Each room is a suite, which makes it perfect for families of those who will be there for a while. One of the nicest things about the hotel is a pair of French doors separate the bedroom/bathroom from the office/kitchen. I loved how modern everything looked. It makes it easy to work and sleep and keep those areas separate. I especially loved the view of the golf course you get from the bar. The pool here is big and shares a great view too. The only downside here is that it's a little far from the center of town, but would be perfect if you were mostly visiting Scottsdale.

Can you say "beautiful sunset"? That's was my main thought as I pulled into the Scottsdale Marriott at McDowell Mountains. The name doesn't lie - the hotel faces east toward the gorgeous McDowell Mountains, and when the sun sets, the entire mountain range glows in the distance. It's a pretty awe-inspiring sight to behold, and this Marriott gives you a front row seat to this natural spectacle every evening (let's just hope they don't build a huge structure in front of the hotel!). Aside from awesome views, this Marriott pretty much has everything you want for a really comfortable stay. The lobby is large and very chic, and when I arrived the wine social hour was in full swing. There were lots of what appeared to be convention goers chatting, drinking and laughing. The hotel is all-suite, so the rooms are all pretty spacious and comfortable. One more thing: the hotel is adjacent to the legendary TPC golf club, so you can sneak away and play at the home of the Waste Management Phoenix Open Tournament.

The Scottsdale Marriott is a sizeable 370 room property tucked away in the hills of north Scottsdale. Walking in, I thought to myself, “this is a proper lobby,” large, welcoming, with an on-site bar and grill: the Agave. The restaurant sells itself as a Southwestern joint, but it looks to me like the sort of standard “new American” cuisine that comes part and parcel with many hotels in the area. And at $15-25 its a bit pricey.

Still, its a pretty hotel. The man who showed me around said the pool “wasn't the biggest,” but I'd say there's plenty of room to sit back and relax. The rooms are all suites, which includes a pretty spacious living area. There's a mini-fridge included in each of the rooms, and you can request a microwave for a bit extra to warm up those leftovers from Agave or the room service, which is served from 6 AM – 11 PM daily.
