                  Sicily Hotel Insider Guide
For thousands of years, the rugged island of Sicily, Italy, has been the keeper of ancient myths, the meeting place between East and West, between Europe and Africa. Just off the coast of Italy’s southern boot, Sicily holds the bones of ancient Greeks and Romans and countless other treasures left behind by the island’s historic barrage of invaders. From Catania and Taormina, you can see the smoking mouth of Mount Etna, once thought by the ancient Greeks to be the realm of Vulcan, god of fire, and the home of the one-eyed monster, Cyclops. In Palermo, the island’s colorful capital, architecture and cultural histories melt together in the form of Arab domes, Byzantine mosaics and Roman cathedrals. Stay in a luxury resort, boutique hotel or hostel to experience this restless island’s endlessly fascinating culture, and leave feeling as though you’ve experienced all of human history.

                  Hotels in Sicily
If you want to stay in a luxury hotel resort, opt for Rocco Forte Verdura Golf and Spa Resort, which boasts gorgeous, sea-facing rooms, its own private Mediterranean coastline, three golf courses, an infinity pool, tennis courts, spa, restaurants and bars. (Basically, you’ll never have to leave.) Other luxury options include the five star Grand Hotel Villa Igiea and Centrale Palace Hotel, two stunning, five-star luxury hotels in Palermo.

In Taormina, the Hotel Villa Diodoro is breathtakingly gorgeous with ornate rooms and views of Mount Etna, while the emerald green paradise of the Caparena Hotel is made even sweeter by its tranquil Wellness Club. Also in Taormina is the intimate Hotel Villa Ducale, an original aristocratic Sicilian villa that serves sumptuous meals on a panoramic terrace.

More affordable options include the Bed and Breakfast Palermo Art Lincoln in Palermo (close to the city’s train station), and the small, quaint La Pensione Svizzera in Taormina.

In Catania, choose between luxury resorts and a number of budget options. The historic Una Hotel Palace is on the high end of the stick, while Agora Hostel has cheap dorm rooms and the quirky BAD Catania (BAD stands for bed and breakfast and design) has colorful, creatively decorated rooms (one with a hammock).

                  Things To Do in Sicily
The impressive backdrop of sea, sand and rugged mountains make Sicily the perfect place for outdoor sightseeing. Perhaps the most famous (and oldest) landmark on the island is the smoking mouth of Mount Etna, which in the summer will lure you to its forest trails, and in the winter to its ski slopes. Then head to Agrigento to visit the Valley of the Temples, a huge archeological site of Greek ruins, and Castelvetrano to see the Selinunte ruins.

To immerse yourself in Sicilian culture and its ancient history, visit Palermo, the island’s capital. The Palazzo dei Normanni stands in the ancient center of the city along with the Cattedrale di Palermo. In the center of Palermo’s lovely Piazza Pretoria square sits the magnificent fountain, Fontana Pretoria, which was originally considered an outrage because of its plentiful nude figures. Today, however, it is floodlit at night, making it a 24/7 sight to be seen, outrageous or not.

At night, see an opera or ballet at Teatro Massimo, or in the summer months join other tourists and locals on an open-air dance floor (one of the best is I Candelei). ... Read more
