A beautiful 10th-century temple dedicated to the Hindu god Lord Shiva, it is built mostly with red sandstone. The main draw is the stunning and intricate wall carvings. A definite must-see!

This is my favorite temple in Angkor. It's slightly off the beaten track but it's totally worth it and shouldn't be missed. This citadel of women is an exquisite sandstone temple.

The creme de la creme of Angkor temples in terms of it's well-preserved and intricate wall carvings. At first glance, two things stand out: individual buildings are much smaller compared to the other Angkor temples; and the material used here -- mostly red sandstone -- lends itself well to elaborate carvings.

Go up close to some of those carvings and examine the sharpness of the carved edges. It's amazing that they had weathered the elements for more than a thousand years.

Banteay Srei is a 10th century Cambodian temple dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. The temple is built largely of red sandstone, a medium that lends itself to the elaborate decorative wall carvings which are still observable today. The buildings themselves are miniature in scale, unusually so when measured by the standards of Angkorian construction. These factors have made the temple widely praised as a "precious gem", or the "jewel of Khmer art.

The name Bantaey Srei meant "Citadel of Women" or "Citadel of Beauty". Even though it is out of the way, a couple of notable reasons will make the journey worth your while. Be forewarned, it is small compared to most temples in Siem Reap.
First reason, it was commonly believed the temple was the only works of female sculptors as the carvings were more voluptuous and delicate.
Secondly, though small, it had been remarkably restored and is the most intact of all the temples by far. Thanks to the Swiss efforts. There is an exhibition site which provides great documentation and pictures of the undertaking.

It's worth the drive! About 45 mins. by tuk tuk, this temple is not huge, but the carvings are spectacular. In my option the best examples of Khmer carvings and in incredible condition. You can ad this temple on the day you are visiting the Grand Circuit or if you are going out to Kbal Spean it is en route.

They called it 'Lady Temple'; One of the smallest temples but it is worth going because of the exquisite carvings on the wall, made of pink sandstones.

They say that the carvings that envelop the external walls of this temple are do delicate that it could have only been built by women.
Further out and not always on the major tours, wouldn't miss this.
