from the tourist trail, Preah Khan is a good place to explore in peace particularly around 4.30-6.00pm when the dusk light shines on the grey stones of the ancient ruins and the few visitors get the chance to soak in the desolate atmosphere of the site. For the moment, Preah Khan remains the most remote temple complex in Cambodia.

You'll encounter fewer tourists at Preah Khan, but the natural destruction wreaked on this complex also isn't as intense as what you'll see at Ta Prohm. With that being said, it was still a great spot to visit and wander around.

This 12th-century temple is quite similar in style to Ta Prohm, in that it is somewhat unrestored with trees slowly taking over the structures. It is also less touristy and full of stunning carvings.

A great temple but secondary vs. the majors. If you are on a short trip, I wouldn't prioritize this one. If you want unrestored (a la Ta Prohm), head to Beng Mealea.. it is exceptional.

To my mind, the finest ‘unrestored’ temple at Angkor, Preah Khan has all of the dramatic tree-in-temple scenery that makes Ta Phrom such a crowd-pleaser, but offers much more besides. The enormous, sprawling monastic complex is possibly the finest place in Angkor for independent exploring, with acres of crumbled passageways and tumbled walls and narrow corridors, in addition to blockbuster photo opportunities with the encroaching jungle. Better still, being both larger and less well-known than Ta Phrom, it doesn’t get anywhere NEAR as crowded, and is one of the best places around to have your own private ‘Angkor’ moment. A top-three choice for the Angkor complex.

This temple is just behind the walled city of Angkor Thom. Usually you would see this on your day doing the Grand Circuit. But if you only have one day for temples, you should include it.

Lacking the scale and immediate drama of Angkor Wat, but as interesting an attraction in my opinion. Like Angkor Wat, a phenomenal testament to some incredible skills wielded in the past. Its state of being partly consumed by the surrounding jungle give an unwordly air. Ancient science and religion meets nature - incredible.
