For a superb introduction to Cambodian food and culture, you can't beat an excursion with Siem Reap Food Tours. The company runs two tours - one in the morning and another in the evening. The morning tour takes in local markets and then heads to a village in the countryside to see noodles being made and rice wine distilled. It provides an insight into how villages sustain themselves and a chance to meet the villagers themselves. The evening tour visits family-run restaurants located off the well-beaten tourist track, the places where the locals eat and socialize. Participants are offered the opportunity to try Cambodian BBQ and street side snacks. The guides are knowledgeable and passionate about Cambodian culture. I took the evening tour and although it was a little costly, it was fantastic to go to places I would never have known about otherwise - the food was delicious too!

This is one of the best things we did in Siem Reap. I was very nervous about food in Cambodia. I'm not the most adventurous eater. A food tour was the best way to get introduced to the delicious food of Cambodia in a safe way. The guide was so knowledgeable and the places we went were not touristy at all. We were picked up and dropped off at our hotel by tuk tuk so it was nice not having to try and find where to go. The food was so good! Price was $75 per person with food included and totally worth it!

For an introduction to Cambodian/Khmer food, you can't do better than a food tour around town and this is the one most recommended to me. I love that they take you around to some of the best street stalls.
