decided it would be a good place to call home. They built rooms, crafted pottery and raised children in the cliff dwellings for about twenty years. Then the Mogollon moved on, leaving the walls for us as a glimpse into the past.

For anyone who loves history and archaeology, who wants to see what life was like for those who came before us, this is one absolute MUST DO. Maybe the best part is the hike up the canyon to the ruin.

Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument is located just 25 miles north of Silver City. It has about 1 1/2 hour drive in and back out on a very snake like road. You will need a full tank of gas going out. Also have at least a gallon of water with you. The VC is accessible, but the hike out to the dwellings are not. Disability parking is provided at the VC. There many hiking and biking trails at the monument. You will need about 3 hours to 4 hours to travel and visit the area.
