South Central England Vacations

Just south and west of London are some of England's most storied cities and places. As one of the most recognizable tourist sites in the world, Stonehenge receives about a million visitors each year. While the prehistoric stones are fascinating, too many visitors make a beeline on a daytrip from London and miss the surrounding countryside. ... Read more
Winchester, the capital of the Kingdom of England before it moved to London, is now famous for Winchester Cathedral, resting place for many important Britons. In between the two you'll find Salisbury, where you can see an original copy of the Magna Carta in its stunning Gothic cathedral. If you have a car, this area southwest of London is tailor-made for exploration. Pubs older than the United States dot the landscape, as do stately manor houses, literary stops (including Jane Austen's house and museum in Chawton) and meandering hiking trails. Keep heading south for seaside Bournemouth, famous for its spas and nightclubs.

So much to see and do, and has so much history and sites to it, with some icons of Britain, such as Stonehenge. Weeks upon weeks can be explored in this vast area, with plenty to do.

I'm not sure I'd put all these counties together (Berks, Wiltshire, Hamps, etc) but I guess that may change as Gogobot grows. Anyway, idyllic region of England with thousands of years of human habitation.

This area can be difficult to visit without a vehicle but there are group tour operators who will take to the many great sites, not the least of which is Stonehenge. But there's also Avebury and some cute villages worth visiting.
