South Padre Island Vacations

Texas got just a little bit bigger in 1973, when it added South Padre Island to its expanses. This smallish island is a tourist haven, and can be reached by a quick and scenic drive over the Queen Isabella Causeway. Visitors here come for the combination of sun, sand, and fun, particularly at the beach. Water sports are exceptionally popular, ... Read more
particularly jet-skiing, charter fishing boats and sightseeing tours. There is also plenty of family-friendly and amusement park style entertainment, including the world's tallest reverse bungee jump at the Gravity Park and tours at the Birding & Nature Center. As you might expect, there are also plenty of beach culture style shops along the coast, of which the selection ranges from the extremely kitschy to more high quality. For fans of seafood, the selection of eateries at South Padre Island is huge, and places like Amberjacks keep the catch fresh and exceptionally tasty. Party seekers will find various options to cut loose at across the island, helping to make this a truly fun and exciting place to enjoy an exciting vacation.

I had never seen sand that white in any other place, well I have but this was the first place where I first saw such beauty, I really recommend it to every traveler who wishes to be left in awe, not for the nicest buildings but for the prettiest beach and the softest sand, I don't think you'll regret it. Definitely for the ones with an anxious or worrisome heart this location so peaceful and breath-filling. Steals sighs, beware

We love to view the fireworks directly from our bay side balcony at our Embassy Condo. We have a direct view over the barge where the fireworks are launched every weekend!

Beautiful sunsets and very reasonable hotels during the off season. Definitely a great beach destination, just avoid spring breakers and red tide.

South Padres Island was the go-to destination for family vacations when I was growing up in Houston. I, however, recommend avoiding Spring Break, unless you're in college and are into alcohol-fueled ragers.

SPI is a great place to visit for the individual, couple or family traveler as long as it is not during spring break in March or bikefest in April. During spring break young adults own the beaches and I fear that unless you are a young adult then you would be miserable. During bikefest, motorcycle enthusiasts own the streets and unless you are a participant, once again I fear you would be miserable.

Otherwise the rest of the year it is a fantastic location to have ocean fun. You would be wise to visit during the low-season when hotels are much cheaper.

SPI's "The Wave" is the free local transit service. You can easily get around the island and hop on and off where you like.

This is a fun place to visit along the Texas coast, and it is about as far south as you can get before reaching Mexico. There are plenty of hotels and vacation rentals, entertaining nightlife, and decent beaches during the day with plenty of activities.
