This is a wonderful place to spend hours watching the birds and enjoying the view. Best times are early in the morning--it opens at 7 and at dusk, bird watching and temperature wise. At 6:45 am go to the big Stripes down the street and get the best breakfast taco on the island (homemade everything including tortillas) and a cup of coffee to go, take it to the birding center and walk out to one of the bird blinds to sit, eat your breakfast and enjoy the view. Of course at out beach house you can enjoy the view from the privacy of your own pier, but the birding center is a nice change--especially if you like to watch birds. You have to pay to get in, but they offer daily, weekly and annual rates and senior discounts. For families they have scavenger hunt cards (looks like a bingo card, but with photos of birds and other critters). They also offer free guided tours on many Saturdays. Check out their website. I marked the Spiritual because this place makes me feel especially close to God!

Welcome to South Padre Island Nature and Birding Center
At the southern tip of the world’s longest barrier island, South Padre Island Birding & Nature Center is a spectacular introduction to a world-class destination, & a doorway to all this vibrant sand, sun, and surf hotspot has to offer.
A slender thread of land between the shallow Laguna Madre and the rolling Gulf of Mexico, South Padre Island anchors the World Birding Center with nature adventures in every season.

The Land
On its 50 acres near the convention center, the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center presents a microcosm of the rich habitats that contribute to this very special place. Dune meadows, salt marsh and intertidal flats are all represented here, along with thickets of native shrubs and trees that are irresistible to migrating birds in their season.

Resaca Our Birds
Our Birds
South Padre Island is a crucial first landfall – a lifesaver – for birds making an arduous cross-Gulf migration from Southern Mexico and northern Central America. Especially after a spring storm, wooded lots of the island teem with an eye-popping rainbow of warblers, tanagers, orioles and thrushes. Wetlands harbor a range of shorebirds and waterfowl, while endangered species such as the Brown Pelican, Piping Plover and Peregrine Falcon may be found here as well.

Learn and Discover
The Center will offer morning bird walks and interpretive guides of the center and the boardwalks will have programs/lectures by area naturalists, scientists, and generally interesting people.

A donation only. Island history, artifacts & wildlife information inside the building. Outside are a series of elevated walkways to view salt grasses, etc to view nature in it's glory with all kinds of creatures. The kids love pointing them out. It is a destination for bird watchers from all of the world.

Wonderful Calming setting to stroll the boardwalk and view local water foul and wildlife. Try to time your visit to enjoy the sunset on the bay and observe the birds coming in to roost. Great walk on own or they have tours available. Don't forget your binoculars!

Walked around and saw quite a few different types of birds and fish....we even saw an alligator up close and personal!!! The workers there were extremely friendly and easy to talk to! Cost me and my hubby $10 to walk around for 30-45 minutes. The cost wasn't to bad compared to other things we've found on the island!

If you enjoy bird watching or just a nice walk make sure you and your family visit the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center. If you have young children, make sure to take a stroller and water. You may get lucky and see a couple of alligators.

Didn't enjoy this as much as the Turtle rescue center but it filled a couple of hours before dinner.

A good way to learn about island life both through exhibits on the second floor (children will love these) to walking over the sea marshes. Did I mention crocodile? Children love to search for him. Bring binoculars and a bird book, if you have them. This is a must for naturalists and birders. Educational toolsand docents help novices identify the bay area's rich wildlife.

South Padre Island is a "birders" paradise. During the migration season, there are birds everywhere. Whether an experienced birder or just a casual observer the Center is a must. Walk the boardwalks out over the Laguna Madre and view the birds and we usually see Alowicious my favorite alligator. .
