Walk to this lovely hotel, with first class spa, dining options, golf and more!

Brooklyn, État de New York, États Unis
First to Review

I completely disagree with the positive reviews given to this property on most other travel websites. The only way I can explain the disconnect is that the Fairmont Southampton (and, perhaps, Bermuda) tend to attract a lot of inexperienced travelers who think that a chandelier in an elevator is all that is need to make a hotel nice.

First, the positives...

- nicely furnished in a conservative country club style. If this is what you like (elevator chandeliers, included) then you will be impressed
- high quality restaurants. We particularly enjoyed the Waterlot Inn
- very kid friendly with many children's activities / services
- a one stop shop with many bars, restaurants, 2 pools, and a resort-managed beach
- a beach club with access to a gorgeous little cove / beach (perfect turquoise water and pink sand)
- free ferry service to Hamilton and free trolley to the hotel's beach club

The biggest problem with this property is that it has nearly 600 rooms but has the public spaces and staffing to accommodate 150-200. Expect crowds, lines, and over extended staff. Plan to spend your time at the Fairmont:

- a lobby that feels like a convention center
- waiting for 20 minutes to get a cocktail at the bar with no chance of table service (ever)
- unreasonably long waits to get a table at breakfast, catch the elevator, grab a taxi, etc.
- gazing upon beautiful turquoise water through 4 rows of thong wearing weight watchers drop outs

In addition to the crowds, we also had a few other basic issues / problems with the property:

- our bill was incorrect at check out. Our rate included breakfast and a $100 F&B credit. These benefits were not reflected in the final bill (though promptly corrected once mentioned)
- the welcome basket that was included in our rate was forgotten (though promptly delivered with a reminder)
- although most staff were nice and well trained (especially the bell staff) temperaments really varied and some were extremely rude. Check-in staff and bar staff on our first night (June 30th) were very rude
- wireless internet is not available in guest rooms and is only accessible from the lobby
- use of the fitness facilities is extra ($15 per day or $40 per stay). This is almost unheard of for a 5 star property outside of Japan

As mentioned in other reviews, it is also important to keep in mind that the property itself is not on the beach and that you will need to take the hotel shuttle to the beach club or take a taxi to one of the nicer, less crowded beaches. The hotel and beach club also lack attractive outdoor venues for late night beachside drinks or dining. There is a restaurant at the beach club; however, it is built away from the water and might as well be back up on the hillside with the main hotel.

A few recommendations if you choose to stay here despite the above:

- don't pay extra for anything with an ocean view. All rooms have a view of the water and what may be marketed as "ocean" view is actually a view of the parking lot if you are at a lower level
- sign up for the President's Club in advance to qualify for free internet
- reserve restaurants, diving, and anything at the hotel's facilities well in advance
- get away from the hotel. Take a taxi to a more private slice of beach. Bermuda is beautiful even if the Fairmont is a zoo

I wouldn't recommend this property to anyone. In might be okay for large families that value simplicity over the quality of the experience. All of the locals we spoke to in Bermuda said "we would never stay at the Fairmont" though they were quick to recommend the Waterlot Inn.

Do not choose this for a romantic get away and do not choose this hotel for a honeymoon.

The rooms are nice sized with comfy beds, the hotel is kept immaculate and the staff is top notch and very friendly. The decor maybe a bit too Victorian for me...but still classic. However, it likely has the nicest beach on the island on its property. Yes, Horseshoe is right next door and I loved the rock formations...but it is not kept anywhere near as nice as the Fairmont's beach...plus I saw as many if not more big blue parrot fish swimming out by the rock formations right off the beach. Stunning sunsets as well

We stayed here last year over New Year's weekend. We left Boston, Friday morning at 8AM and was on the beach shortly after 11. This is a beautiful hotel with large rooms and fantastic ocean views. The food was pricey, but exceptionally good. Every meal that weekend from breakfast, to lunch to dinner was delicious. When the quality is there you don't mind the bill as much. There is a tea every afternoon at 4PM, which is quite fun. Many varieties of tea and coffee, wonderful cookies and pastries and lots of different chocolates. Even if you are not staying here, you can partake of te tea time for a fee and I felt it would be a nice, elegant fun thing to do. The hotel has its own beach with a wonderful pool cabana, lockers and changing rooms. Tennis is available and the resort has its own 9 hole executive golf course. Just a great place to stay, highly recommended.
