mix of Italians and mostly German tourists. Visit in the shoulder season, however, and enjoy the cured meats of Norcia, medieval hill towns, and scenic drives relatively undisturbed. November - April brings cold and rain, but can still be a good time to hole up in a vacation rental, light the fires and sample hearty Umbrian cooking.

Quiet historical town in Italy 2-3h out side of the Rome . Hidden gem I found my happiness there in this cozy small town

Spoleto is a great example of an Italian hill town. It's also the home to the Festival dei Due Mundi-the Spoleto Festival, as it's otherwise known. Off the main piazza, look out for a little trattoria called La Lanterna-its food is not overpriced and it offers daily specials in season. My only amico spoletano (spoletan friend) turned me on to the place.

Spoleto has a unique charm that keeps the visitor wanting more.
It isn't as well known as some of the other towns in Umbria so the masses (unaware) haven't spoiled this truly special place.
The central focal point is a medieval bridge that has great view's of the countryside. There are many archaeological areas including a duomo that is breathtaking. The warmth of the people will keep you coming back again and again.

This is the town that first made me fall in love with Umbria, return 10 times and write seven books about the region. It seems almost fake in its central Italian hill town perfection. When you first look at a map, you'll see streets that seem impossibly narrow. And they are; many of the central 'streets' are cobblestone pathways and stairways, tucked in between ancient stone houses where families have been living for hundreds and hundreds of years. And, if that's not enough, Spoleto explodes each June and July with the Spoleto Festival (Festival dei Due Mundi), when musicians, playwrights and artists from around the world descend upon the small village for three weeks of culture and entertainment. Don't miss hiking to the Rocca above town for a view that I can almost guarantee will bring tears to your eyes.
