Description
Russia’s largest Russian Orthodox cathedral, St. Isaac’s Cathedral, was built on a foundation of 10,000 tree trunks, driven in during the 19th century by a team of over 11,000 serfs. Not surprisingly, ... Read more
the impressive project took over 40 years. The church features a beautiful dome, rising over 100 meters high and glinting with over 100 kilos of pure gold. The gilding of the dome required an archaic form of spray painting, in which the mercury-laden solution resulted in the deaths of many workers.

One of two places where you can see the city from top. This is the great architecture monument and historical place. Must visit if you are in St.Petersburg. No mater good weather or bad- take jacket- very windy on top. And comfortable shoes

In a city full of monumental and inspiring Cathedrals, it can be hard to stand out. But St Isaac's stands as the largest Russian Orthodox Cathedral in the city and towers over Alexander Park. It's scale becomes even more impressive when you take into account that the original foundation was made of hundred of logs!

Massive and beautiful. The cavernous interior inspires reverence and contemplation. Very much a cathedral.

Unusual cathedral in that it is a Russian Orthodox Cathedral designed by a Frenchman in a classical style. Reputedly the fourth biggest Cathedral in the world.

St. Issac's Cathedral was initiated by Tsar Alexander I as a result of Russia's defeat of Napolean Bonaparte. It took over fifty years to complete, and the two times I've visited St. Petersburg, Russia, it's always been under renovation.

You have one of the best collection of Mosaics in this Cathedral. Most people mistake them for paintings but upon closer look they are mostly mosaics. Art lovers would surely drool at the various colourful masterpieces.

This is an unusual one for St. Petersburg. There are no onion towers, but it is a beautiful building, and if you have the time, by all means check it out. Architecture is king in this city and you shouldn't miss any of it.

Designed by a French architect and opened in 1858, St. Issac's was used as a museum of atheism during the Soviet years! With its icons, frescoes, statues, guilded dome and 48 granite columns from Finland, Russia's largest cathedral is worth a visit.

That huge cathedral can be seen all part of the city and even outside from St Petersburg on clear days.Interior of cathedral is adorned with beautiful mosaic, lapis lazuli, malachite and gold. For that reason it is called 'museum of stones' Every part of that cathedral are full of amazing paintings.Under the ruler of Soviet Union it was converted to museum of atheism. But today is open for worshipers.I adore that cathedral. It was really fascinating.
