average bear, a good four hours or so should suffice. A guided tour in English is highly recommended because it's not just the art that's on display here, but the buildings themselves.

The Hermitage Museum is the largest history and art museum in Russia and the second largest museum in the world so if you plan to visit it you should allocate considerable time. Tourists passionate about history and old art, can find the museum in the center of the city, on the bank of the river Neva. Today, the collections of the Hermitage Museum are divided into five buildings.

The amount of priceless art here is overwhelming. The building and the art are simply gorgeous, and it is definitely worth a visit. Be warned that it can get pretty busy, and the popular wings may be packed. Also, there's so much art that you may not be able to see all that you want!

A must see when in this city. The hermitage holds one of the largest collection of art in the world. It may take you several days to go through the entire museum. The museum has some of the most famous pieces by Leonardo de Vinci. They provided guided tours and audio tours. You can buy them Inoue beforehand to avoid lines when getting here.

Amazing! Even as a kid I was inspired by the incredible collection of art. I wouldn't miss this if you get the chance and make sure you have plenty of time here.

I can see why the State Hermitage is one of the finest museums in the world; it's simply stunning. With a huge collection held in a museum so beautiful it deserves its own museum (a museum museum?), the Hermitage rivals the Louvre and other such grandiose exhibiters.

A massive art gallery. You could probably spend your entire stay here and not see all of it.

Believe the hype folks! This is a must see experience. You could easily spend a whole days in this wonderful museum. I ambled it two days consecutively and still couldn't get enough. This place alone merits a visit to St Petersburg.

The State Hermitage is a museum of art and culture in Saint Petersburg, Russia. One of the largest and oldest museums in the world. Of six buildings of the main museum complex, four, named the Winter Palace, Small Hermitage, Old Hermitage and New Hermitage, are partially open to the public. The other two are the Hermitage Theatre and the Reserve House. Its collection is so large that it would take years to view it in its entirety--at last count, there were nearly three million works on exhibit. The museum is especially strong in Italian Renaissance and French Impressionist paintings, as well as possessing outstanding collections of works by Rembrandt, Picasso, and Matisse.

There's only one place like it, and you cannot miss it. This one of the top five must sees in St. Petersburg. This is where Catherine the Great lived and collected art for the first time from abroad. There are many pieces by many masters in this amazing giant palace, turned museum.

I spent a full day here, and feel like I barely made a dent in this massive collection. The Hermitage feels like its own nation, just devoted to art. The 250 year old building itself is ornate and impressive, but once you get inside be prepared to wander through a labyrinth of old, beautiful works of art that go on and on (so it seems) without end.

How can you not be charmed? This place has the most amazing collection of art and an extraordinary interior to boot. Even the Soviets understood its importance.

Being one of the most remarkable museums in the world, the Hermitage overwhelms you not only with an enormous art collection but with history and lavish and beautiful architecture. You need days to explore the museum properly, and you will probably have only a few hours, so either hire a guide to take you through the highlights of the museum, or be selective in what you want to see. It’s advisable to get your tickets online ahead of time, so you don’t waste your time standing in line.

No matter the account, the Hermitage ranks as a top three museum (for those curious, i.e. likely no one, my list would be the Louvre, Hermitage, and surprisingly Tate Modern). It's well deserved - the museum deserves several weeks, but is usually given little more than a day. Make sure to check out the giant clock (a personal favorite) and massive staircases (surprisingly ornate). The art - both the building itself and housed inside - is worth as much time as you can spare.

I have also heard great things about the museum and being an art history minor I was very excited to see all the great works. Although I saw some great pieces of artwork, I felt the museum was a little overrated. The museum doesn’t have any masterpieces like the Mona Lisa or the David. I did see one Michelangelo sculpture at the museum which was interesting. I also saw two Leonardo da Vinci paintings which was fun to see since there are only 14 of his paintings in the world. It is my goal to see all 14 sometime in my life and I have seen .... so far. My favorite paintings at the Hermitage were the Renoir's. The more Renoir paintings I see, the more I like him as his style really appeals to me. Even though I love art museums, the two and a half hours we spent there was more than enough time for me.

This museum is HUGE! I almost lost my tour group a few times. But once I calmed down, this was a truly enjoyable experience. I almost think you need more than one day to see the whole place because there are just so many rooms and exhibits.

A labyrinth of art and majesty. You probably won't see everything in a single day. And you may actually pass up some sections if you lose your sense of direction. But the place is grand. It's elegant, classy. So many gorgeous works of art. So many paintings, and sculptures. Suits of armor.

Even if there wasn't any collections on display, it would still be a complete joy ot wander through.

My favorite room is the one with all the Greco-Roman sculptures. Fabulous.

It may be the most well-known museum in Russia, but the Hermitage is much more than hype. You can see everything from ancient vases to modern art classics like Henri Matisse's "Red Room." On top of that, the Winter Palace is absolutely gorgeous. So at the very least, check out exterior, but if you have enough time, I'd highly recommend stepping inside.
