Tampere Vacations

Tampere is a city in southern Finland, notable in the region for its inland setting. It sits on an isthmus between Lake Pyhajarvi and Lake Nasijarvi, and draws most of its power from rapids that connect the lakes. The city was for most of its history an important industrial center (textiles, paper), often compared to Manchester, England for its ... Read more
regional role. Numerous museums focus on the various industries and their rise and fall, while others are more offbeat. For example, The Lenin Museum allows visitors to explore the apartment in which Vladmir Lenin lived during his exile to Finland, while the Moominvalley (at the Tampere Art Museum) celebrates the famed Moomintroll character and is sure to delight any child. The city and lakes are chock full of parks and islands, which serve as attractions for locals and visitors throughout the year. If in the area, be sure to visit Rajaportin Sauna, the oldest public sauna in the country, to partake in a Nordic tradition.

Not touristy at all, Tampere is a pleasant city with enough sites to keep you busy for a day. But most of all you're here to see a Finnish city, and life here. Excellent opportunity to visit a public sauna on the edge of town by the lake.

According to some counts, Finland's second largest city, Tempere was an industrial giant, known for its paper and textile factories. Today most of the factories have been converted to shopping malls or office buildings. The best way to enjoy Tampere is to simply start at the train station and start walking, keeping your eyes open.

Tampere is a very walkable, picturesque Finnish city that doesn't get close to the amount of tourism that Helsinki, two hours away, receives. If you're already on the southwest coast of Finland, it's worth checking out.
