As a US passport holder, I didn't experience any hassles here. However, I wasn't a huge fan of the way I saw Mexicans being treated, particularly ones that didn't appear to be causing any problems.

Two to Four hour wait is super ridiculous. Even with Sentry or Global Entry it takes at least two hours to cross the border. Once up at the front of the line, only four officer working the gates while five to seven others lounging around. CBP purposely extend the wait time on purpose. I feel really bad for the children and elderly who cross over to Mexico as tourist and have no idea how long the line gets when crossing back over. CBP really needs to lower their wait time.

If you're crossing the border I highly recommend you drive a car unless you want to wait 2-4 hours in line. I've heard the wait can be shorter, but I'm not risking it next time. Buy the insurance and drive over.
However, if you HAVE to walk, when it's time to cross back over look for some people in white button down shirts and they will charge you $6 bucks to take you in the bus lane, which is hours faster than the pedestrian line. Not a scam..a time saver!

This border crossing is usually long, so plan ahead and consider parking your car in a lot and walking across. The taxis are readily available after the turnstiles and it will save you time. Try the newer Otay border crossing which is to the east and less populated.
