Tossa de Mar Vacations

Tossa de Mar is a picturesque and historic town located on the Costa Brava, about half-way between Barcelona and the French border. The crooked, narrow streets of its old town have been surrounded by a newer city to help support the tourism influx. Crowded in July and August, Tossa de Mar is still lovely to visit outside of the crush season. Tossa ... Read more
de Mar was one of the first places on the Costa Brava to attract foreigners by hosting a small colony of artists and writers who drifted here decades ago. For a nice play to stay, try Aparthotel San Eloy or Hotel Costa Brava.

We've been on the Castle and it was so beautiful, the views but also the houses that are inwalled, all those little streets, i really had a great time with my camera, it was our last day at the Costa Brava and this was the perfect trip for ending our 15 days vacation time in the Costa Brava.

Some history:

There is ample evidence of settlements dating back to the Neolithic period, and it is believed that the area has been continuously populated since that time. Between the 4th-1st century BC the first Iberian settlements appeared, followed shortly after by the Romans in the 1st century.

In 966 Tossa was ceded by Count Miró of Barcelona to the Abbey of Ripoll. Some two centuries later, in 1187 Tossa was granted its charter by the Abbot of Ripoll, coinciding with the building of a church atop Mount Guardí, the remnants of which can still be seen today.

Sometime in the 12th century the mediaeval town was walled off and a castle was built on the highest point of Mt. Guardí, this castle was to be subsequently replaced by a wind mill, and this in turn by a lighthouse which is still operational.

By the year 1500 the first houses were built extra-murs to accommodate population growth. This process was greatly accelerated during the 17th and 18th centuries, shaping an urban configuration which was to remain practically unchanged until the arrival of mass tourism in the 1950s.

In 1989 Tossa de Mar was the first place in the world to declare itself an Anti-Bullfighting City.

Probably the most beautiful and picturesc coastal village in Spain. After visiting most of the country, I can certainly say Tossa de Mar has overpasses all expectations.

Here the type of tourism is more refined, small in numbers and more family and couple oriented. No crazy wild parties and cheap pus or bars where teenagers get drunk, like in Lloret.

This is a tranquil, safe and very typical small village offering great places to eat and comfortable hotels for every budget.

I loved this town and its beach. I came here twice...its only a 2hr or so bus from from Barcelona. If I had more time I would have stayed for days. Right by the beach are plenty of great places to eat. This was my favorite beach on this trip. Great people watching and very scenic altogether.

This small village lies on the Mediterranean shore.
Go down to the beach and take a picture with the mediaval castle behind you.
Also on the way to Tossa de Mar you drive on the coast line on a cliff, from where the view is amazing.

I wish I'd had more time here! We accidentally drove through the tiny narrow streets of the old town on the way to the beach. The beach is gorgeous.
