Description
Each year, the citizens of Valencia turn out for Fallas, a week-long festival that is truly a year-round event. On March 15 (the plantà), more than 350 structures made of cardboard and wood are ... Read more
brought into the streets, where they remain until March 19 (the cremà), when they are burned. Each monument is designed to satirize events or public figures (ninots), and is the result of an entire year of fundraising and labor by Valencia's populace. Fallas is truly an expression of community, as each neighborhood comes together to create its own ninot.

Very noisy time of the year in Valencia, but it is totally worth too see at least once.
Come and enjoy the churros con chocolate (fried-dough pastries with hot chocolate) or the bunyols de carabassa (pumpkin bunuelos or fritters). This is a non-stop 24-7 festival, which is quite popular in Europe. If you like to sleep and prefer the quiet side of things, then I would not recommend it.

You either join the party or leave the city. This is a typical Valencian saying. Fallas is just an outstanding mixture of noise, party, fireworks, burning of huge sculptures, parades, bands, dancing and drinking. It is one of Spain's best known festivals where thousands of people gather once a year to celebrate Saint Joseph's Day. The festivities last one week, but there are mascletas (firework and dynamite shows at 2:00 PM) every day throughout the month of March at the Main Square (Plaza del Ayuntamiento). This is one festival that you must see at least once.

This may be one of the coolest festivals I have ever been to. Groups spend all year raising money and designing some of the most beautiful and elaborate floats I have ever seen, and on the big day all across Valencia the night is lit up when the floats are set afire. It is almost a pity to see some of these pieces of art go up in flames, but it is an experience you will never forget.

The Spaniards know how to throw parties and Fallas is the best festival of them all. Enjoy all the neighborhoods and be prepared for a spectacle when the fireworks go off at night.
