Tucked away into an old heritage building I found the St Clair. The “travellers welcome” sign made me feel welcome without actually being greeted by a person. The rooms were clean and guests are provided with towels to use during their stay. I particularly liked having the option to stay in a female only dorm. Although the bathroom is shared, there are also sinks in the rooms, so you don’t have to go all the way to the shared bathroom to brush your teeth at night. St Clair is down the street from the party district on Granville St so even though its close to the action, the hostel itself is nice and quiet.

The St. Clair Hotel/Hostel was quieter than I expected. Usually, hostels have lots of students sitting around chatting or working on computers, but other than the reception clerk I didn’t see anyone.

I liked the heritage feel to the place (It’s the first concrete building in Vancouver). For example, it was nice to see the stained glass above the doors of the rooms. That said, the rooms are very basic: bed(s), lockers, and a sink. There are signs of wear in various places too, particularly the doors, but renovations are underway.

Guests don’t have access to a full kitchen. Unfortunately, there is just a microwave, kettle, and fridge. There are many area restaurants, though. I guess what was most disappointing about the St. Clair was the lack of people, and I think meeting others is a major reason why you’d go to a hostel in the first place.

Straddling the border between the Granville shopping and entertainment district and the hipper Gastown neighbourhood, this is a prime location for culture seekers, foodies, and nightlife lovers. In typical hostel fashion, the accommodations here are simple furnishings and shared bathrooms, with a fridge and microwave on each floor for emergency cooking needs.
The biggest drawback of this place was dealing with this hostel’s no walk-in policy. It was a bit of a pain and definitely kills the social atmosphere most hostels thrive on. I get that because this neighbourhood used to be the type of place where people walking in off the street, looking for a room, would usually create more problems than their money was worth. This is no longer the case and the St Clair should really work to be more inviting.

Given the price and location near Granville, the St Clair is a decent find. The vibe is more hostel than hotel and the rooms are very simply furnished and share bathrooms. Each floor has its own bathrooms as well as a microwave and fridge so you can make yourself a light meal. The building is more than 100 years old so it's a bit musty and there is no elevator - be prepared to lug your bag up lots of narrow stairs. It does not have a social vibe at all, so is best for travelers who like to keep to themselves.

Note that there isn't a formal reception desk or anything so you need to check in within certain hours (before 7pm on weekdays). The phone numbers for the staff were posted on the door and they have a strict no walk-in policy.
