The Burrard Hotel is the cool kid on the block. It’s a trendy, retro boutique hotel in the heart of downtown. The hotel marries the old and the new; the renovation kept the bones of the old structure but vamped up the rooms and character. Some of the cool free features that the hotel offers are espresso machines in each room and Brooklyn Cruiser bike rentals to enjoy all that Vancouver has to offer on. The courtyard in the center of the hotel provides a tropical oasis, with greenery aplenty and bright patio furniture. It’s got a modern ‘70s, Miami vibe going on. The rooms and bathrooms both have a modern aesthetic and the shower has handy built in soap and shampoo dispensers on the wall. There is a cute café at the bottom of the hotel where you can enjoy a cup of java before you cruise around town.

What a cool hotel with serious style! The big neon sign at The Burrard made it super easy to find, not to mention very unique! It immediately made me think of James Dean, old school corvettes and the late 50’s. Needless to say, I fell in love with the décor. I personally felt the rooms were a bit small, but really unique. They definitely have style that evokes past eras. The location of the hotel (in downtown Vancouver) makes it easy enough to be out all day too so that’s plus. Since it is so centrally located and close to transit / walking distance to various parts of downtown Vancouver I wouldn’t spend more than a few hours there getting ready in the morning or getting ready for bed. You can even walk or cycle across the Burrard Bridge to get to the other side where the beaches are. Even though it’s really close to Davie Street and the pary district the hotel itself is quiet enough.

Staying at The Burrard was like stepping into a Southern California motel circa 1961, or at least what I imagine it to be. Neon to the nines, walls drenched in teal and sandy yellow tones, and encompassing a lush tiki-inspired courtyard, this hotel has plenty of character.
This one definitely goes in the ‘boutique hostel’ category though because it is a really unique spot but the rooms are so small! Each room has their own bathroom, but the room is really just a place to lay your head. Given its central location though, I found there were more than enough attractions within walking distance. Ask for a room that doesn’t face the hospital on Burrard Street, otherwise you’ll be hearing the ambulance sirens all night long.

If you like Mad Men and all things mid-century modern, you’re going to love The Burrard. The moment I stepped into the lobby I felt like I’d teleported back to a much groovier time.

Also, their inner courtyard is a real show stopper, with huge palm trees and Solair chairs. The rooms are simply furnished, but have everything you’d expect in a boutique hotel, as well as touches of retro décor and Nespresso machines. The building is newly renovated and air conditioning will be installed in the rooms this summer. The Burrard is LGBT-friendly too, check out the “We’ve Got Pride Every Day of the Year” special on the website.

The hotel doesn’t have a restaurant, but its Container Coffee café serves drinks, panini, and baked goods. They feature great local products, including Mink Chocolates and Earnest Ice Cream.
