One of the only Vancouver hotels that was built before WWl. Designed by WT Whiteway and built by EJ Ryan in 1913. Part of the mosaic floor and the neon sign survive.

The St Regis is definitely a top contender for the best mid-priced hotel in downtown Vancouver. First, you can't beat the location in terms of convenience. You step out from the Granville skytrain station and it's right there. This also means that shopping, dining, and the art gallery are in easy walking distance.

I also love that that St Regis is independently owned (by a Canadian, no less!), so it has tons of personality. Though it's been renovated top to bottom, it is a heritage building and the old-world charm has been retained in details like the marble bathrooms, solid wood furniture, and luxurious bedding. Another neat inclusion is free phone calls to anywhere in the world - now is the perfect time to call that cousin in Australia! Rates also include a full breakfast and the on-site bar is a nice place to unwind with a cocktail and watch some sports on TV - the bar is more casual that you would guess from the hotel!

Unlike other hotels that revamp themselves with a simple coat of paint and some flat-screen TVs, the St. Regis took its renovation seriously by spending $11 million on just 65 rooms. The result is a 5-story heritage building where the interior is unexpectedly plush compared to the somewhat drab façade.

Not to be confused with Starwood’s St. Regis chain, this boutique hotel is privately-owned by a Vancouverite whose love of abstract art means that guests get to enjoy bright, bold original pieces in every hallway and stairwell.

While the old space has been gutted and filled with modern luxuries, patience needs to be exercised with the building’s original structure: standard rooms are small compared to more modern hotels, and one undersized elevator services all five floors (you’ll likely take the stairs at some point). If you’re looking for a room with a view, this is probably not your place. The corner of Seymour and Dunsmuir isn’t particularly attractive, and it can get a little loud at night from club-goers (ask for a room higher up). Street aesthetics aside, the location is very central and the guys at the front desk are exceptionally helpful.

This was a beautiful hotel. Very quiet and very friendly service! And, in the heart of downtown Vancouver. It was near the prime shopping district and within walking distance to the Ferry. We would definitely stay here again upon our return to Vancouver! The rooms were gorgeous.

Not located on a particularly attractive corner of Vancouver’s downtown, but it is very close to just about everything you could ever want on vacation. The most interesting and enticing thing about St. Regis though, is the package of perks. Once you’ve checked in with the upbeat and knowledgeable staff, a lot of things that usually cost money at hotels come for free at St. Regis. All calls are complimentary. And I mean all calls. From dinner reservations across the street to calling family in Uruguay: all free. Where most hotels charge ridiculous amounts for bottled water, St. Regis provides free Fiji water at the bedside.

It is an old building though, so there is no fitness facility. So what do the good people at St. Regis do about it? Offer guests passes for the premium Steve Nash fitness centre just around the corner, of course.

Now, the bad thing about having an old hotel is that things are a little bit smaller. Small elevators and rather modestly-sized guest rooms don’t create a feeling of ultimate luxury. Each room does have opening windows and are quite attractive and once I’ve worked out and said goodbye to my family in Norway, I don’t usually need a huge room.
