about 300 pillars that are the most spectacular and easiest to reach. Beautiful and surreal, just 11 miles away from Varna, there stands a stone forest. And just like anything else that lacks a rational explanation, the origins of Pobiti Kamuni are shrouded in mystery and legend. Pobiti Kamuni (literally "Stones Beaten Into The Ground") has been a spiritual site since time immemorial. In the 1950s, archeologists discovered settlements from the Early Stone Age, not far from this spot. Today, the only thing on which scientists agree is the time period when the stone pillars were formed: during the Eocene, 50 million years ago, when southeastern Europe was indeed at the bottom of the sea. As a result of their long exposure to the elements, they have acquired some fantastic shapes, resembling animals, birds, and people.

Just 18 kilometers west of Varna, this 50 million-yr-old geologic wonder is on the UNESCO World Heritage waiting list. It's made up of about 300 stone columns and formations, some as tall as 20-feet. You can walk among the calcium carbonate pillars and wonder how they were formed. The debate is still on. Or imagine the glories of the ruined civilization that erected them, a lively fantasy. Take a moment to look at the plant life, preserved collection of native Bulgarian plants. This is a popular destination, so expect to be joined by tourists unloaded from busses. It's supposed to be a dramatic space to visit in winter. Be sure to dress warmly to protect yourself from the biting winds. Stop in the gift/shop museum for a souvenir and to read the informative displays.
