Conceived and built by an investor and perhaps one of the few cities to have been built as an entertainment complex, Venice was originally a replica of the Italian city - even including the canals. A few waterways survive today, although most have been filled in to make roads. The 50s and 60s brought the "Beat Generation" to Venice, while activist ... Read more
Black Panthers also made it a home. Today, Venice Beach and its quirky Boardwalk make a great place to walk, bike, and feast your eyes on bodybuilders, henna tattoo artists, psychics, bowling ball jugglers, and many, many more.

Weather

Summer brings crowds to Los Angeles, booking up hotels along the coast and restaurants in the city. From September to May the area is less crowded, and the air less smoggy, though you may encounter the hot, dry ... Read more
Santa Ana winds. Headed to the beach? Don't go in June when the 'June Gloom' makes the beaches cold and foggy for most of the morning. The coast is always a bit cooler than inland (head to Santa Monica and not Hollywood if you want a breeze). Whatever time of year you go, however, you can leave your down coat at home.

One of the most eclectic spots in America - you have definitely seen Venice in the movies. Think people with roller skates skating past body builders and street artists. But beyond the boardwalk, Venice has undergone a renaissance in recent years, with tech giants like Google moving in, together with high end fashion botiques and restaurants. The best place to get a feel for L.A. beach culture.

A funkadelic, crazy-Californian kind of place by the beach, Venice does its own thing. Venice's wacky, wild side is what you'll find down by the beach boardwalk (Ocean Front Walk), where new-age hippies, Rastafarians, body builders and surfers all hang out. Inland along Abbot Kinney Blvd. is where you'll find the chic boutiques, creative eateries, art galleries and more catering to Venice's more glamorous side.

Venice is a gritty city different from many of the picturesque beachside California towns. There is an authenticity that draws you in to feel the beauty, desperation and chaos. It is as diverse as the artists that populate the town.
