Chic and elegant atmosphere in the heart of Venice. The Metropole has an incredible position that many hotels in this city can envy. 300 metres far from Piazza San Marco, near the Ponte dei Sospiri and Rialto. Set in front of the ferry boat stop S. Zaccaria. The area is very touristic, you will see a lot of people around here, but despite that, during the night is quiet. The hotel is surrounded by restaurants, luxury stores, touristic shops and bars. Refined welcoming at the arriving. Staff is very professional. Attention to detail in every rooms. Nothing is missing for give the customer a nice and pleasant stay. I found very romantic the atmosphere inside the room in Venetian interior design. Fabulous pieces of furniture that create a sophisticated ambient. Breakfast is expensive, but top quality. I recommend this place for a romantic weekend.

Local from Venice

Setting foot in this 16th century building overlooking the Lagoon is like walking into a Sultan's drawing room. Elaborate damask furniture and chaise lounges line the walls of the Oriental lobby. Eclectic shell-candelabras and sea-themed candleholders dot the antique mix of furniture, while soothing New Age music relaxes your mind.
There are two ways upstairs. One winding staircase brings to mind a medieval castle, with iron banisters, stone walls and a collection of ancient locks lining them. The second is rectangular wooden staircase reminded me of a school.
In fact, the building started out as an orphanage in the 16th century, then when it became a guest house Vivaldi frequently performed in what is today the Orientalbar, by the front lobby. Freud was also a guest once here, and more recently the celebrity sightings have been numerous. The MET Restaurant at the back boasts one Michelin star an air of faraway decadence equal to the lobby, with a lush garden in back with canopies and a giant Buddha statue.
Rooms are fully renovated and each with their own original decor and antique furnishings. The snacks (nuts and chips) are yummy. Lagoon View suites range from 550 euro to 1800 Euro per night, and Canal View suites are 450-1700 Euro. A Classic Double room is between 210-600 euro depending on the season.
The owner being an antique collector makes this a place worth wandering, for instance my hall was lined with a collection of antique wooden bedposts.

We have only eaten at the restaurant of this hotel which is one of the two Michelin starred restaurants in Venice. It’s very tiny, six tables, and the décor is very red. We start with a water menu and are each poured a glass of prosecco. The dinner menu has 3 tasting menus consisting of either 17, 11 or 5 courses. We opt for the al a carte menu, which they call al a carte, so again, not traditional Italian, more French in its approach.
The menu items are not traditional at all. We are served two amuses, a rabbit consommé and tuna tartare. My starter of four “Cicchetti” was a squid ink gelatin square topped with a poach prawn, squid and a seared scallop; mousse of eel and crab, baccala on a brioche with yoghurt and an anchovy surrounding an anchovy mousse topped with a caper. We also had squid salad and an elaborate layered dish of guinea hen, handmade pasta, cheese flan and tangerine. My husband and I split a risotto “Amatriciana”. Many of the items came with scare quotes. The risotto was given its name presumably because it was made with a very smoky pancetta and tomatoes, surrounded by a pesto sauce and topped with prawns and pine nuts. Our son had handmade pasta with lentils, a rice cracker, fish and a sauce with a curry spice, cardamom, we thought. For secondi, we had hare “salumi” which was jugged hare formed into a sausage shape accompanied by a juniper flan which had the most amazing taste; baby beef cheeks done in Valpolicella with blood oranges and onions; and red mullet on an artichoke heart with almonds, olives and a “nougat” which was a sauce we couldn’t identify.
Again, we manage two bottles, this time of Barolo and a Guado al Tasso, an Antinori super Tuscan. For the latter, I have a long chat with the sommelier about the various choices. Here, too, he cures the wine glasses before pouring the wine. The sommelier, who has become our best friend by this point, notices that we are sharing the chocolate tasting dessert, so he recommends something which he says is not on the menu because they found it in the cellars. It is a Barbaresco Chinato, similar to the Barolo Chinato, a slightly sweet wine flavoured with herbs. It makes a very interesting compliment to the chunks of different dark chocolate we are served. We are completely full but are brought a tray of tiny pastries and manage to eat most of them.
The meal was a unique experience.
