treasured and revered national monument in Laos. Legend asserts that Buddhist missionaries built the structure in the 3rd century BC to house the breastbone of Buddha. However, the building that stands today is a restoration of the temple constructed by King Setthathirat in 1566. Featuring three levels that represent elements of the Buddhist faith, the golden stupa is marked by a towering, four-sided spire and is the site of many national celebrations throughout the year.

Beautiful golden temple with some nice surroundings. There is a nice statue of the lying Buddha here as well. Worth the visit when in Viantiane!

This golden stupa is beautiful. If you're looking to save a bit, rent a bike and ride from the city center. You can also hire a tuk-tuk to take you here (add it to a day trip and see a few places to get your money's worth). On a sunny day, the stupa shines like nothing I've ever seen before! Take some time to explore the temples that surround it as well - there's so many vibrant colors in them!

This golden stupa is slightly outside of the main city centre, but is well worth the tuk tuk fare to reach it. It's regarded as the most important national monument in Laos and is quite an impressive sight under the glowing sun. There are various other temples within the same grounds as the stupa, each uniquely different and worth visiting. You can quite easily spend a leisurely hour navigating your way around the various Buddhist offerings here at Pha That Luang.

The national symbol and most important religious monument of the country, That Luang is a three-layered gilded stupa. Accessing the inner courtyard gives you a slightly closer view of the stupa, and lots of Buddha statues. Vientiane's most important festival, Bun That Luang, is held here in November on the night of the full moon.

Not the most spectacular or architecturally interesting of the temples in South East Asia or Laos. If you in Vientiane for a couple of days I recommend visiting early in the morning before it gets too hot or late in the evening when the area surrounding comes alive with evening walkers and aerobic step dancing. It's these times where you can catch a glimpse of the sleepy normality of this sleepiest of capital cities.
