Description
Few trails in Hawaii offer the reward of making it up the first leg of the Koko Head Crater Railway Trail. Set at a startlingly steep angle, this trail proceeds up an extinct volcano along a straight ... Read more
and grueling set of steps. This is indeed not for the faint of heart, as the trail never relents it's brutal slope until you reach more than 1000 feet in altitude. If you make it this far you will have spectacular views of Koko Head Crater and it's expansive garden, in addition to the pacific and Hawaii Kai to the south. The next leg of the trail proceeds along the edge of the crater, but most people call it a day after reaching the first stop. Make sure you bring plenty of water, wear good shoes, and consider heading up ether early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid too much sun. If you have the guts, this is a rewarding and scenic hike that if enjoyed every day would have anyone in tip-top in no time.

Short hike with a fairly large elevation gain...therein lies the challenge. Watch your step as you make your way up the tracks. Bring a camera for the view. Urban explorers should also bring a flashlight!

A great hike to an even better view!! The hike is 1048 steps up and 1200 ft high. It’s definitely a good workout. I would not recommend this for anyone with injuries. There are parts of the hike that require good stability and balance. I highly recommend it to adventure seekers and outdoorsy people.

Came here last time I was in Oahu but was not prepared for the hike as we did not have the proper clothing. I will definitely do this hike up to the top next month. Review to follow.

One of the fun hikes going up the railroad tracks uphill. You get your exercise and be rewarded with a great view from the top, best at sunset.

Absolutely brutal hike. Trail goes straight up on the rails with no switchbacks or anything to make it less steep. The view is absolutely incredible though and worth the pain that you'll be feeling in your legs the next day.

Trail enhancements have been made to assist with the ease of climbing up and down, which is nice! Awesome hike for families and pets and the view of Hawaii Kai from the top is beautiful. There are public restrooms near the parking lots at the bottom of the trail; trash cans are limited so bring plastic bags to contain your trash. I recommend brining water and sunscreen.

I had a lot of fun on this hike. What separates it from other hikes is that it is on a railway that goes straight up the side of a mountain. It is cool to look down the mountain to see all of the distance you have covered or look up the mountain to see how much farther you have to go. I recommend getting there early before it gets too hot and wearing good shoes because it is easy to trip. Getting to the top felt like an accomplishment and the view is beautiful. I highly recommend it if you are on Oahu.

Free! Not for little kids or acrophobics. Great view of east Oahu from Diamond Head to Makapu'u Point. Most crowded on weekends. Best to go early in the morning before sunrise since the railway trail is devoid of any shade trees on the exposed slopes. Park near the tennis courts at the Koko Head District Park and follow the other hikers who will surely be there. Fitness buffs run up with with loaded packs or gallons of water for weights. Bring water, hats, sunscreen. Pack out what you brought in. We treat ourselves to a shave ice or a nice lunch or brunch at the Koko Marina Shopping center, or drive over to Costco Hawaii Kai for a nice berry smoothie or frozen yogurt.

Take water, a zip line down would be awesome and help with traffic. View is good

We took 30 minutes to go up the hike and I'm not in the best shape (took plenty of breaks). 1000+ steps! Definitely felt the burn in thighs for 2 days after. The view was so worth it though! Took us another 20 minutes just to take pictures up top. I want to say coming down is almost harder than going up because it is steep and slippery from the rock/sand. We went on a weekday at 830a and didn't have any trouble parking. There were maybe a total of 8 of us up top taking pictures. But as we were coming down there was a long trail of people coming up so might be crowded for pictures if you come ~10a. Bring lots of water! Wear sunscreen! There was a guy who finished coming up in 18 minutes! Amazing!

Ow. My legs. Really though, my legs were like jello by the top, and the next day they are very painful. The view at the top was like nothing else, you can see a panoramic view of the island on top of an old gun turret mount, and even explore the tunnels beneath if you don't mind the possibility of spiders or tetanus. It really wasn't that exciting in the tunnels so if you are on the fence, don't worry you're not missing out; go sit and watch the sunset in 360. There's a section with mountain missing and only wood slats, so if you're afraid of heights bring someone to help you or just hands and knees it through that section. There are something like 1000 steps, and it's hot, and it takes a crazy long time before you finish, and if you have bad knees like me it can hurt (and is probably bad for your knees) so just take it slow, and let others pass by.

One of the toughest hikes on the islands due to the fact that it's just railway track straight up Koko head (more than 1000 steps to take to get up to the top). Once you're there, you have a view that's to die for. Be safe and be courteous, if you need to, step to the sides to let other people pass you.

1,084 steps to the top and the view is freaking INCREDIBLE!!!! This is definitely not a hike for small children or beginners.

They said hike...I said okay...

First off, I was promised food food food by the end of this hike.

Second off, I would see insanely breathtaking views, hence picturesque opportunity.

Third off, I'll have firm glutes and thighs...oh, and being sore too!

You'll see me sweating, panting, and whining the whole way. All was worth it. Trust!

I hope you give this endless stairs "hike" a try. Cheers!

Koko Head Crater Railway Trail is a simple, yet challenging trail to accomplish. It gets steeper the more you reach the top of the hill. But once on top, you get a great view that overlooks the entire Maunalua Bay, Hawaii Kai, and Sandy Beach Shore. Bring lots of water and a sunglass since there is not much shade to retreat from.

Yeah it's a lot of stairs, but the views at the top are worth it. Just power through and regret it tomorrow.

Walk 1000 steps up to one of the best views on Oahu. You will get a 180 degree view of the island reaching from Waikiki to Diamondhead and Hanuama Bay to Sandy Beach.
