This is a beautiful hotel. It has sleek Asian furnishings, and uses feng shui techniques to provide a pleasant, calming environment. Some of the rooms have a lovely view of the Jefferson Memorial.

A number of film stars and other celebrities have stayed there in the past and the hotel handles their requests and needs for privacy diplomatically and easily.

Although the hotel is within walking distance of the Smithsonian and the Mall, count on using limousines or taxis. The neighborhood, near government and other office buildings, doesn't have much to offer and is quite deserted on nights and weekends.

I stayed here for two nights while hosting a conference. I've been here a number of times, and while it's in an odd location, it turns out to be really easy to get to and from -- the national mall is at the doorstep. The view of the river and southwest waterfront are great.

If you happen to be travelling with a small child, they have a stellar crib service -- full crib with Winnie the Pooh sheets and blanket. They even give you a little bath pack including a rubber ducky, shampoo, and other little niceties. The view also includes a look out onto the 14th street train bridge, which, if your toddler is anything like mine, is *big* hit. Many choo choos to talk about, along with planes taking off from national airport, and boats in the harbor.

The room service is amazing. Cityzen Restaurant downstairs is on the best in the country if you feel like dropping a good sized pile of cash. The So'Wester restaurant is all right.

Good times to be had!

Also key, especially for business, is the lounge bar that opens onto a lawn with the above views and some nice benches. Tables are plentiful and service is efficient but unobtrusive.

You may notice a theme in my reviews here, but the sheets are second only to the Four Seasons. And the bathroom is decadent, with a huge bathtub and separate shower. It's about 1/3 the size of the room; and unlike NYC, the rooms are good-sized.

The Mandarim boasts excellent service and true charm. While the hotel is likely a good candidate for amenity-seeking business travelers, it has fantastic proximity to the National Mall and all it's attractions, making it a great pick for tourists as well.

THE place to stay if you're visiting DC. And if during summer months, you can get a $235 rate. And if your birthday , an upgrade to a palatial suite at no charge.

Isolated from most places you want to see you will add cab fare to the Mandarin's already expensive rates. They have tried so hard for an oriental touch that, for me, it looks more interior decorator than oriental.

While I would prefer a location that is not so isolated, this is a lovely place to get away from it all. Washingtonians have been known to go there for staycations.

One reason to go: the spa. It's quite relaxing and has a large variety of massages, facials, body treatments, etc. The exercise room and pool are fine, too.

Even the music at the Silk Road Cafe, a place for coffees and teas, is soothing.

Brooklyn, New York

True gentility is graciousness untainted by even the slightest hint of snobbery or condescension.

Case in point: we arrived at the Mandarin Oriental Washington DC – our ‘95 Honda with its dented front fender and back doors that don’t open—put-puttering up to the cathedral-like entry way where a Rolls Royce limousine already idled. Even before we had the chance to blush self-consciously, our doors had been opened (well, at least the ones that could), our bags already taken care of, and we were warmly invited into the lobby to check in.

One might assume that such a grandiose Goliath of hospitality, host to emissaries and diplomats, senators and kings, would certainly look aghast upon our meager arrival. In fact, quite the contrary. There was absolutely no hesitation in our welcome; no moment of skepticism as to our belonging there. True gentility embodies the courteous warmth and innate grace that delights me every time I arrive at a Mandarin Oriental hotel. Royalty is the signature of their brand and they live up to their emblem without fail.

The world-class service might be the solid structure of the Mandarin Oriental’s crown, but its jewels of top-notch spa experiences and restaurants with incredible, wonderfully inventive cuisine, shine like bright stars in their own realms. Further, it’s the implementation of all the little details that make you feel not just at home, but better: indulged, treated to an experience where you get to feel perfectly at ease, in a place that seems to anticipate your every whim and deliver each one to you effortlessly.

The fact that the Mandarin Oriental in Washington DC is in quite possibly the most ideal location for a visitor to the capital city is, of course, no accident. Windows and terraces seem to sail over famous monuments: the Lincoln and Washington memorials, the National Mall (which is only a minute’s walk away). You would have to actively avoid sightseeing, stepping out into the morning with the entire capital city at your fingertips. And, after a day of hitting up some history (and maybe an evening indulging in the fun nightlife on U Street), be sure to relax in the pool and spa facilities that all guests have access to. There are steam rooms, Finnish saunas, and Jacuzzis to rejuvenate and unwind.

Brooklyn, État de New York, États Unis

Lovely hotel. A bit cookie cutter but still maintains some of the charm / Asian influences that MO is known for. F&B facilities are good. Weekend brunches are excellent.

The major drawback to this property is the location. It isn't convenient and skews a bit dodgy. Don't plan to walk from the property. You'll probably need to take taxis.

Luxury at its best, great rooms, amazing staff
