1801 by John Adams (the USA's second president). it was originally referred to simply as the "Executive Mansion". It's more memorable nickname came after the marble exterior was whitewashed in order to cover burn marks sustained during the War of 1812. Events for international dignitaries and Washington, DC movers and shakers occur on a regular basis. For the rest of the world, tours are available with advance notice, but subject to periodic closures.

The White House is historical and iconic. Many presidents have come and gone. Lots of security and FBI guarding the premises.

I was disappointed to say the least. It was very small and not much to see/do. The security check to get in took longer time than the tour itself.

Secret service was real nice and helped us lost folks out. Great once and a lifetime view.

When I visited here, you could still go into the White House and see the rooms and literally see history. Unfortunately that's not the case anymore. And I'm not too fond on going with the current person living there but it's still a very pretty sight to see. It's been around for a long time and seeing something that has been such a public figure for our nation is a very humbling experience.

Not too many protestors the day I went. I will not judge who lives there but a fair share of good ones have lived there in the past.

It seems a lot smaller that what you would imagine but its so full of history and it was fantastic to see it in real life!

Looks unfortunately more and more like a castle under siege than a people’s presidents house.

To be honest, it was smaller then I expected and I'm ok with that. Not much else to do but snap a pic

I worked on the 18 acres for over 3 years as military staff, 2006-2009. The east wing tour is well worth your time. Plan well in advance, there is a waiting list several months long.

Kids were let down cause for some reason they thought it would look bigger than it was. But still a must see!

Obviously a very historical building! Very beautiful and elegant, but you can't get too close. A very popular destination, and for a good reason! You can find some great spots for pictures almost anywhere here.

You can't blame the building for its occupant. The White House is pretty special to see even if you don't like the residing orange monster.

I visited with a group for a tour as well as the SXSL event that President Obama hosted, and so much of the trip was pre-planned for me. Touring takes advance planning, things to note; (1) you can get free tickets through your member of Congress, (2) request tickets at least 3 weeks in advance, (3) as of 2015 you can take pictures (I don't think large cameras are allowed). If you plan on going, you should definitely check out the website at www.whitehouse.gov for more information.

So many people trying to get a picture. It's a must see to fully experience D.C. but I was a little freaked out by the amount of secret service and police dogs. I know they are there for safety but it almost ruins the experience.

The seat of the US National Government and probably the most famous address in the world. The security could get a bit tight especially if there's a threat to national security but still tops the list of places ro see in this city.
