stone structure, and is the tallest structure in Washington D.C. The monument is an iconic image of America, let alone D.C., and one would have to really try to miss it on a visit. Relatively unknown is that the monument has an enclosed observation deck at its top that is open for visits at no cost. Book a time slot and make sure to be ready when the elevator opens.

Fun fact: the bottom third of the obelisk was built first and then 30 years passed before they resumed construction. By then the granite quarry was depleted so they had to source stone from another quarry. If you pay attention you’ll notice the change in color where the different stones meet.

Great place to see. Unfortunately it is under construction until 2019, but still a great visit.

Beautiful park and a great center piece to help you find your way around. I was sad that it is closed and has a fence all around it, though.

Love this place! I didn't get to go up in it... but just seeing it makes me a happy happy man.

I have been here a few times now in my life and it is awesome to see such an old obelisk standing tall and representing our wonderful country. I am a big fan.

I love the absolutely simple design of the monument surrounded by a ring of flags providing a view of the surrounding countryside and it is utterly beautiful to just gave upon it.

I have done so in the bright light of day and by the subtle hues of the moon and streetlights. Both are awesome. I just know that this single building is one of my favorites in Washington DC.

I consider this to be an absolute must stop to see in DC to just stand and gaze upon if nothing else.

We learned a lot of history from our DC by Foot tour guide, we never new that work on the Monument stop for 20 years. Now the completed Monument has different stone color around 1/3 up. We love the added story and it show some things are just the way they should be. Looks great as is.

Sitting on top of a hill. From it, you get great views of the Capitol, the White House and the Lincoln memorial.

This is the center piece of the National Mall. Breathtaking views all around and you're allowed to relax around the grass area and have your own picnic. Definitely a historical piece you must see in person.
