Description
This wildlife sanctuary is a must on any trip to Wellington. They have the incredible goal of recreating all the local flora and fauna as it was before the arrival of mammals.

The huge 225-hectare sanctuary that is Zealandia is great for nature lovers and those who want to explore the great outside while seeing some wildlife in their natural habitat. The fantastic sustainable ethos of Zealandia and makes you feel happy to be supporting the conservation projects just by visiting. I’d suggest booking a walking tour if you want to spot some birds as they can be a little difficult to see if you’re not an experienced guide.

Zealandia is a great place to visit no matter your age. You don't have to have a passion or special interest in birds either because it really is fascinating and so much fun to walk around listening to all the different birdsong overhead. The volunteers are great and very informative. A lovely way to spend a day!

One of the best wildlife sanctuaries I've ever visited. Massive yet not far at all from the city centre. You can spend an entire day here exploring if you wish.

How many nature sanctuaries have you visited that have a 500 year plan? Their goal is to recreate the bird life and fauna that originally existed in New Zealand. . . before mammals arrived. The only original mammal on New Zealand was the New Zealand bat.
